Does Crochet Use More Yarn Than Knitting? #shorts

Does crochet really use more yarn than knitting? We did an experiment to find out! Two swatches, same size, same yarn, equivalent hook and needle sizes—but one in half double crochet and one in stockinette stitch. Which will use more yarn and by how much?

Thank you to Ancient Arts Yarns for providing the yarn used for these samples. This sample was made with Herlig.

Interesting! Next time you might not need to unravel the swatch, just weigh each swatch to find out how dense the yarn is without unraveling.

I prefer crocheting over knitting but always hate how crocheting takes so much more yarn

The swatches were not the same size. The knit one was clearly smaller. Should have started with the same amount of yarn then made up the swatch to see which is bigger or actually have the swatches the exact same size

As someone who has 150+ yarn, it makes me happy that I get to use yarn regardless of knitting and crochet. ^^

Why did you have to unravel them to weigh them? Am I missing something?

I wonder how the measurements/weights would compare if the crochet was single stitch, since half-double uses quite a bit more! TY for a fun yarn post 🧶 🎉

You should have used a swatch with single crochet stitch not half double. Half double uses an extra loop every stitch to make the fabric thicker. Not a fair comparison

Do not forget yarn thickness with weight

That’s so cool! I am personally a crocheter but I am thinking of leafing knitting! :)

Yes, but the actual size of the samples are different. The knitting one is smaller thus you would be using more yarn to create the same size garment. So if the swatches were physically the same size, the amount of yarn would be similar I would assume

The knit patch took 3x the time too I bet.

The knitted swatch was smaller than the crocheted swatch so off course it's gonna weigh less, you had to stretch the swatch to get it top be the Same size!!!

Look at labels. I look on two different labels on yarn labels one says super bulky number 6 and other says medium number 4

I like that crochet takes up more yarn so I can buy difderwnt colors and textures.

Thought you were going to measure how long it was when you unraveled it. Otherwise you could have just weighed them without unraveling lol

Wow I would not have thought NY this much of a difference

Wow, how interesting. I have always wondered that. I know people say that crocheting is faster than knitting, never knew that crochet uses more yarn. 😮

You don’t need to unravel the swatches you could just weigh them
