“If you don’t expect too much from me, you might not be let down.” One of my all-time favorite lyrics.

"Til I Hear It From You" and "Found Out About You" are a great pair. Those two and "Hey Jealousy" were all written by Doug Hopkins. Very sad story there. But that guy could write some songs.

The songwriter, (Doug Hopkins) wrote this song, and the other main hits for Gin Blossoms, but unfortunately he was a severe alcoholic and was unable to be a reliable member of the band. The band had to move on without him, meanwhile he moved back home and ultimately ended up taking his own life. He was a superb songwriter and just couldve overcome his demons. It really is a story of what could've been...
This song eventually catapulted Gin Blossoms to fame in the early 90s but Doug never really got to see or feel the success. Gin Blossoms second record (Congratulations, I'm sorry) is titled as such as an ode to Doug.

Long live Gin Blossoms

Robin Wilson is just perfect at capturing tones and styles to suit the music behind his voice!!!

Doug Hopkins had the uncanny ability of writing songs that were driven by catchy, pop hooks and melodies. All the while containing deep, reflective melancholy lyrics.

I loved these guys. The truth is, I always will. They are the most underrated band of the 90s. Wish they'd gone further.

This is an anthem from my early 20's. Could not help but drive faster when this came on. Classic 90's man. It's about FORGETTING jealousy. He is saying, let's just feel happy NOW.
"The past is gone/ But something might be found to take it's place"
It's a hopeful song.

Songs like this are why the 90s were so incredible. We had it so good and we didn't even know it.

Time has passed, he’s reflecting on the jealousy that tore them apart. Time has allowed him to reflect more on the yearning he feels to be with her again, the nostalgic aspects of their relationship.

The thing to understand about a song like this in the early 90s (92 if I recall correctly, maybe 93?) Just 2-3 years earlier a song with subject matter and a sentiment like this would be a ballad. It wouldn't get played otherwise. When stuff like this was coming out we'd made the leap that you could write songs like this and have it rock at the same time. Such a breath of fresh air at the time.

For me this is one of those songs that can take on greater meaning the older you get if things just don't go your way or you make too many mistakes in your youth looking for a good time and living too much in the moment. It's a warning that being like that can come back to haunt you.

"You were the best I ever had. If I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago, I might be here with you!"

That's a you just pulled your head out of your butt after years of it residing there and seeing things as they really are for the first time revelation for those lucky enough to be that honest with themselves.

I assumed that this relationship broke up originally because of the singer's jealousy o ef something.

But now he's back in town, and showing up at his ex's house drunk, hoping she'll take him in, and maybe he'll get lucky.

The songwriter had a serious drinking problem, which led to him being fired from the band shortly before this album was released. Sadly he didn't get better and ultimately killed himself. RIP Doug, the band wasn't the same without you writing the songs

“Allison Road” & “Til I Hear It From You” are the next most popular singles by them.

I feel like it’s a good sign when Brad gets lost in the lyrics and isn’t hovering over the spacebar.

I would also recommend Better Than Ezra “Desperately Wanting” & The Refreshments “Banditos.”

Awesome group. College rock, alternative rock. Yes, there's a video for this song. Group, too. Song has been on movies and tv shows.

Always great to see your reactions. To understand this song you have to understand the writer, and the band in general. Doug Hopkins, former leader of the band was an alcoholic, and he was very aware of his disease. As the writer of this song, he is "jealous" that he can't have a normal relationship, one not destroyed by alcohol. It is alcohol that led him to "blow it long ago". He wants that normal life with a woman he loved, but knows it is not obtainable. The band in general wrote songs of deep emotional substance, but with often times poppy, catchy, jangle tunes and brighter sounding lyrics. It is a contradiction that embraced - this sounds poppy and happy, but when you listen and understand the lyrics, you're like wow, this is deep and kind of dark, very emotional and transparent this guys struggles with mental health and alcohol. Doug Hopkins committed suicide in 1993 after he was kicked out of the band for his alcoholism and the band started to really get popular. The whole story of him and the band (they are all very talented) is really remarkable and a story of tragedy and triumph.

I wish someone could transport me back to the 90's. People were so much more chill back then for the most part, parents could trust their kids to be out and about adventuring in town, and TV and Music were at their pinnacle in my opinion. Many people I know live in a state of fear and constant anxiety these days, I don't remember that being the case 'back in the day' as they say.
