Zoo Tours: The Wilds of Ohio: PART ONE

Показать описание
As if you needed a another reason to visit Ohio, there's a lesser known Safari Park that needs your attention! The Wilds, located in Cumberland, is 90 miles east of its sister affiliate in Columbus. The entire park spans nearly 10,000 acres, making it North America's largest conservation center! Once a land for coal mining is now a haven for endangered or threatened species to roam about seemingly never ending pastures, which allows for one convincing African AND Asian safari. While the Wilds offers hiking, ziplining, fishing, and even vacationing, our tours will focus on their more popular open air safari. A 2.5 hour guided bus tour that actually takes you into the exhibits, and makes you forget that you're even in zoo. Part one of this three part series will take us through the first few fields, and get close extremely close and extremely distant encounters with wild asses, hellbenders, goat-antelope, Bison, and the Indian Rhinoceros. Enjoy!

Species List (in May 2022):
1. First Pasture: Pere David's Deer, Sichuan Takin, Przewalski's Horse (will see later), Javan Banteng (will see later), Trumpeter Swan (did not see)
2. Second Pasture: Indian Rhinoceros, Persian Onager, Bactrian Camel, Bactrian Deer (will see later)
3. Distant Pasture: American Bison
Lake Trail:
4. Budgies
5. Red-crowned Crane, Central Chinese Goral

The Wilds looks like an incredible place to visit! The zoo that made the biggest impact on me is the Indianapolis Zoo. For one it’s my home zoo and two it is the reason I got so interested in animals, along with visiting other zoos.

4:37 fun fact: America once had its own rhinos at one time, they would’ve looked like the Indian one horn, but were similar in size to the Sumatran and were hornless
Edit: America had several species of wild horses and camels at one point as well!

I think the zoo(s) that was impacted me the most definitely has to be ZSL Whipsnade as it was the very first zoo I ever visited so it holds a very special place in my heart.
Also Berlin Zoo and Tierpark Berlin due to them having sooo many ungulate species that I photographed during my time there.
Marwell Zoo also is a gem for me as they have so many rare Antelope species in the UK such as Arabian Oryx, Beisa Oryx, Saharan Dorcas Gazelle and Southern Lesser Kudu

I live in Cleveland and on Mondays the zoo is free, so it's the Cleveland zoo, and my favorite part is the Rainforest. It's also nice that we are 1.5 from Toledo and 30 minutes from Akron and 2 hrs to Pittsburgh and 2.5 to Detroit. After I went to Cleveland for the first time, my mom was busy on weekends driving to all the cities within four hours( Cincy, Pitt, Detroit, Columbus, Toledo, Akron) . I can remember going to the Wilds for the first time and being very impressed with the sheer size of the place. It is actually the size of a suburb, 14² miles and it blew my mind.

The zoo that had the biggest impact on me is the Bronx Zoo; it’s the one that introduced me to the devotion to conservation that many zoos and aquariums have, and it’s where I first got to see several rare animals that I had previously only seen in books (mainly Zoobooks).

Singapore Zoo. It’s unlike any zoo in America and matches if not tops San Diego. They have the environment to their advantage and can use their surroundings. I will never forget walking into the zoo and the first thing I went to was this platform overlooking a small area of trees, and a pair of Siamangs were swinging around and hollering. No fences, no glass, just open air, and the Siamangs were just hanging out in the trees, with gharials chilling below. Unbelievable. The Night Safari is also one of a kind as well.

The Zoo that has the biggest impact to me is the Detroit Zoo. Mainly because I lived in Michigan growing up and I was awed by the DZ's mission to save endangered animals and rescued individual animals in need (i.e. they saved a lioness who was guarding a crackhouse).

Una belleza de Zoo, con grandes espacios simulando, un poco, su habitat natural.

The wilds has been top on my list of zoological parks to visit for a while. I even live in Ohio and still haven’t found time to go there. And to answer your question the zoo or aquarium that had the biggest impact on me was either the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo or the Dolphin Research Center. For the first one it’s mainly because it’s my home zoo that I’ve been going to since I was a kid. But for the second one, the Dolphin Research Center really solidified for me that I wanted to work with animals in some way. And also encouraged me to protect the environment.

The zoos that made the biggest impacts on me have been the Bronx (the tv show kickstarted my serious interest in a career in zoology), Philly (had a 3 year internship here), and Columbus (helped me find my college).

So far my favourite zoo you have featured on your channel has been the Cleveland MetroParks Rainforest. I can watch that episode over and over and I enjoy it just as much as the first time I saw it. Of course I am enjoying every episode I have watched, but that one definitely stands out.

It's hard to decide which zoo is my biggest influence, but maybe:
-Oakland zoo cause it's my childhood zoo
-Monterey bay aquarium for it's outer bay tank and it's concrete industrial-ish aesthetic
-and San Diego simply cause it's so dang massive

This video makes me even more excited to see the Wilds next year even more! And this is only the first part? I cant wait to see what the next two this month have in store for us! And in regards to answering your question, there are MANY Zoos that have left an impact on me ever since I moved to Florida, each one opening my eyes to just how big the animal kingdom truly is!

Noticed the species list in the description, whereas the Przewalski's Horses and Banteng are fine being on either side of Spillman Lake they vastly prefer the hills just after Lake Trail. Also, the Trumpeter Swans were part of a reintroduction program by Ohio, they're more regular visitors than residents. I've only seen them twice so far this year

The zoo with the biggest impact for me probably was San Diego Zoo's Safari Park because I was fortunate to see some of the last two Northern White Rhinos. And Przewalski’s horse is the answer to your trivia question!

I love the San Diego zoo, because it got me started on antelope.

The Columbus Zoo is the zoo with the biggest impact to me because of the size and variety of animals uncommon in other zoos
