I don't understand why people keep repeating the wrong idea that "braking energy is converted". It has nothing to do with braking or the brake system. The MGU-K is an electric motor generator that is connected to the combustion engine. When the driver releases the throttle, it starts to operate using the energy of the car's movement (kinetic) that is transferred from the wheels to the engine, and then to the motor generator, making it rotate and produce electrical current that charges the battery. This way, the MGU-K helps to decelerate the car, but it doesn't use any "braking energy". Afterwards, it can operate as an electric motor using the energy stored in the battery to deliver power to the car.
