For me, this is by far the best Taupin/John song of all. Masterpiece. Truly.

One of my favorite lyrics of Bernie's: Until you've seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through

Always gives me goosebumps.

Such a different voice than in the early 70's. He still sounds good, but nothing tops his early singing voice IMO.

Incredibly good song. Difficult to choose a favorite EJ song so I’ll label it top 5.

And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow
In New York City

Until you've seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And I thank the Lord
There's people out there like you
I thank the Lord there's people out there like you

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why
They know not if it's dark outside or light

This Broadway's got
It's got a lot of songs to sing
If I knew the tunes I might join in
I'll go my way alone
Grow my own, my own seeds shall be sown, in New York City

Subway's no way for a good man to go down
Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown
And I thank the Lord for the people I have found
I thank the Lord for the people I have found

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why
They know not if it's dark outside or light

And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow
In New York City

Subway's no way for a good man to go down
Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown
And I thank the Lord for the people I have found
I thank the Lord for the people I have found

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why
They know not if it's dark outside or light
They know not if it's dark outside or light

Interesting that he changed up the song ever so slightly - normally he sings verse 1, then verse 2, and verse 3 is the first 1/2 of verse 1 followed by the second half of verse 2. But this time he just repeats verse 1. I miss his vocal change on that verse 2 second half where he goes up when he sings "and the hobo HE can drown". Anyways, I have to say, it's really amazing how his voice has improved over the years and is still so strong at 60. One of my musical heroes for sure!

So sad what the liberals have done to NYC. Yes, it was always a unique and peculiar place, but with its own brand of charm and mystery. Now it's just another uninhabitable cesspool.
