Yep they are a lifestyle. NOT for people out at work all day.

Having any dog will generally result in a big change in one's life. However, with high prey drive driven breeds of dogs require a much difficult level of training and responsibility. Purebred breeds like Belgian Shepherd varieties, Cane Corso, Working German Shepherd Dogs, Board Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs, Catahoula Leopard Dogs etc. require a firm but fair hand and a first timer owner of one of these breeds may even require a trainer or training club. High prey dogs require responsible dedicated constant and consistent training - traits that most pet owners lack. Pet owners who lack the energy, time and dedication for dog training may want to avoid working and sporting dogs.

GSD's are better because they are smarter and have less energy. That said BM's are amazing if you have the time and energy to exercise and train them for a few hours a day. If you are looking for a good protector Both dogs are great at protection just ask the military but the main reason the military is switching over to the BM's a lot more now is they are lighter smaller and eat less not because they are better at protection then a GSD. The GSD is heavier so they can take a man down faster and easier then a BM if properly trained. As long as I exercise my 2 working class GSD's for an hour a day they are fine. I throw a string ball for them like 15 minutes twice a day and play with them inside the house for the remainder of the time or I take them hiking in the woods. Nether one of these two dog breeds are for couch potatoes though, but I myself am retired and actually like to go hiking in the woods most days and backpacking with my dogs, and I take mine white water canoeing, plus I like to do other activities that I cant take my dogs so My GSD's are a great fit for me Because I actually have an active lifestyle in which they can take part in. A dogs energy level is something that people should very much consider before getting a puppy, I know I did. They should not just consider how it looks or what trainers can do with them but they should research the specific dog breed to see if it would be a good fit for their own lifestyle and their family. The right fit can add so much to a persons life, the unconditional love and companionship can be such an amazing addition to a persons wellbeing and happiness. Mine make me laugh every day because they do something silly, The pet class or show line GSD has even less energy than the working class BTW

You should always research the breed before you get a puppy. People need to stop buying breeds because they seem to be ”popular” if you can’t handle a dog like that. If you want a low maintenance dog then get a small dog not a large intelligent working dog that needs your attention 200%. These dogs are wonderful family members but more than just pets. They need a job to do on a daily basis because that’s what they were bred for.
