I was going to give you "lip" for not leaving the white wire longer and capping it off, but you said you were taping it.
if it was to touch the metal at all, it could trip an upstream GFCI/AFCI if it's fed by one. assuming wired correctly/neutral not hot(old homes often have that hackery)
