Hi James! I was just doing MAT 2011 Q2 part (iv) on my own and I was wondering if it would be correct to substitute k as k-1? What i've worked out is that F(k-1) + Fk = F(k+1) but I'm wondering if it would be correct to say that it's the same thing as Fk + F(k+1) = F(k+2) since F(k-1) + F(k-1+1) = F(k-1+2) --> F(k-1) + Fk = F(k+1)

Hi James, where can I find answers to the extensions on the MAT live website (assuming there are answers)?

at 1:44:50, 2011 Q2 ii) would I get marks if I proved it true by subbing in numbers ?
So, like, for k=3,
A(4) = 0 = C(3)
B(4) = 1 = A(3) + 2C(3)....

I really need some proper advice you know. Like people keep telling me to do well in the MAT, just practice a lot of past papers, which is what Im doing, but every time I do a past paper or a set of past papers (MAT specifically), I make mistakes and I hopefully try to understand and learn the mistakes, it's just no matter how much practice I do, I still continually make frequent mistakes over time in each successive past paper I do and I don't seem to be getting anywhere with practising. I even done some SMK kangaroo UKMT practice but still, no real change if u ask me. Obviously, some MAT questions are easier than others to get right by spotting a basic trick perhaps but still. What method do u think I should do to stop making the same mistakes and improve my MAT practice score especially the MCQs?

For Q (ii) would i still get marks if it took a different approach and instead showed that for example if i were to sub in k=4, then A(4+1) = C(4), A(5) = C(4), 2=2? And do a similar method for the rest by using the given values of k=5 and k=4 for A, B and C.

For MAT 2007 Q2 ii) could the expression be (4^k)x+4^(k-1)+1?

would the leading coefficient of f(f(f(f....f(x)))) for any n > 2 be

(2 + (-2)^n) ^ (3k-3)

because with each f(x) its being squared, and then multiplied by itself, which is just being cubed. it will be cubed (k-1) times for k f(x)'s. Is this answer correct?

could you write fk = ak +1 + ck+1, then use the parts above to get into terms of ck and bk then do fk+1 = ck+1 + bk +1 and repeat that for fk+2 and then show that fK + fk+1 is fK +2
