RAW: Oregon announces first presumed case of coronavirus

Oregon has its first presumed case of novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

The person who is believed to be infected lives in Washington County and is an employee at Forest Hills Elementary School in Lake Oswego, according to Oregon Health Authority.

Authorities are working to identify people who were within close contact with the person and may have been exposed. Contact tracing is the top priority, according to Oregon Health Authority director Patrick Allen. Anyone who was exposed will be notified by health officials.

The smug dismissiveness toward legitimate questions is really off-putting. People want to know the potential places that this person could have caught or spread the virus.

First of all, I am an international student from Nanjing and never went back to my hometown since summer break in 2018.
I want to share some information from my family members who still lived in China.
In Nanjing, there is currently 93 patient who has ensured to have corona, and 58 of them has been cured. My cousin is a college student and her school announced that the school will not be opened until the end of February. Meanwhile, my family members are living in different apartments, Nowadays, if you don't have a pass to show that you are a legal resident who lived in this apartment, then you are not allowed to come in (my mom is the one who checks the pass and I saved some photos of her while she is doing her job). My dad cooks every day and he needs to bring his pass with him every day since he needs to go to the market.
Talking about the market, most of the market has been announced that they need to be shut down around 7 p.m at night every day. Meanwhile, If anyone finds a patient who has a high fever or from Wuhan who did not report to the government, then they will get 200 bucks reward once they report it to the local police.




Here is some of my own thought:
Although I don't really like any government, what the Chinese government has done this time has surprised me a lot.
I checked some of the videos from the internet and most people just laugh at the innocent Chinese people for no good reason at all (BTW someone from England even made a party just for doing that). The point is if you guys really don't trust the Chinese government or what I just said, then just check out South Korea. The patient number is doubling almost every single day.
Eugene has a great number of homeless people, I am not sure what happened to me if this virus spreads in Eugene. I really like this small town and I don't want to see this thing happens, so I have some suggestions:
1. Wash your hands more frequently.
2. Open your window every day.
3. Avoid public areas.
4. Don't go outside too frequently
The virus is weak against the heat so the corona infection rate will cut down sometime around summer. After all, when facing the virus, we are all same to each other.


2020 is a difficult year for all of us, hope everyone will be safe.

EVERYONE this person had close contact with (family, students, faculty) should be put in a MANDATORY 14-DAY QUARANTINE!!! To not enforce a quarantine could be deadly for thousands in the Lake Oswego area. Let's see if Oregon has the guts to do the right thing and stop the spread of this deadly virus in its tracks.

I hope that the individual gets better. My school (i don’t live in forest hills but very close to it so the school is in my school district, so my parents got the call about it) doesn’t have it but we are close enough to that school. I’m honestly scared, but I want them to get better.

People need to settle down, there's literally nothing you can do to stop it. Banning Chinese flights was about the only move and we didn't do that. Now all you can do is wait and see how bad you get it and if you die or not. Panic will do nothing. Staying home is not an option for most people in this state living check to check and with no savings to fall back on.

Knowing that the doubling time of this disease is around 7 days, we can work out a few things. Given that the school employee has been symptomatic since Feb 19th, we can assume they were initially exposed on Feb 12th and have possibly been spreading it since Feb 14th. So assuming other people were exposed as far back as Feb 12th, there has been time for 3-4+ generations of further community spread. 95% of the population of Oregon lives right along the I-5 and I-84 corridors. It's already here. Sugarcoating the reality is NOT helping anyone. If we are smart (and I doubt we are) plans are being drawn up to do what China and South Korea have done: quarantine everyone down to the town & neighborhood level, cancel any venue where people can mingle, test everyone all the time for free, etc.

Advice: over a week ago I asked my doctor to do early refills on prescriptions due to concern of supply chain disruptions for medications coming out of China. 90+ % of our medications come from China and India, we don’t even make penicillin in America; this since 2004. My doctor did authorize early refills. When I contacted the prescription provider I was asked why I needed the early refills, I answered them honestly, the woman I was speaking with stated she would need to speak with their supervisor. The provider said that they would not issue renewal. I asked them if I was going on a long vacation if they would have renewed the Perscription and they said yes.
