How To Get Started With A Home Gym
There are a number of very good reasons to set up your own home gym, like convenience and cost savings. Not having to worry about battling traffic to get to the gym, or having to add 20+ minutes to your workout block to get there and back, are among the best. Making it easy to workout means you’re much more likely to do it and having made the investment means you’re more likely to stick to it regularly.
How To Equip A Home Gym
In this video, I show you my recommendations for the equipment needed for a home gym. This ranges from the basics that any simple home gym setup should include, to the more luxury items that you can purchase over time if you have the space. Let’s dive in.
Adjustable Dumbbells (2:13)
My first recommendation for the best equipment for a home gym is the basic adjustable dumbbell set. Purchasing adjustable dumbbells allows you to increase your weights as you improve, without paying out more money. Getting a set where you need to place the plates on the handles and lock them in is more desirable than those that can change weight with the twist of a dial. These are typically less hard wearing.
Rubber Flooring (3:23)
If you would like to protect your floor from dents, cracks, or scuffs, I would recommend getting some rubber flooring. You can purchase this in the form of small tiles, or large mats, depending on how much space you have. Sometimes, if a local gym is refurbishing, you can purchase second-hand gym flooring for a very good price. Otherwise, new rubber flooring is available at any workout store, or even on Amazon.
Adjustable Weight Bench (4:10)
Next on my list for an affordable home gym setup would be an adjustable weight bench. I would recommend spending a good $200 - $300 on this, to make sure you get a bench that will last and that can support a good amount of weight. Please don’t opt for the cheapest bench as you will need to buy again later on. Cheap benches do not last!
Kettlebells (4:57)
Kettlebells are my next suggestion, as many of the FF30X workouts can be done with them. They are a great substitute for the dumbbells and can be used in a more dynamic way when performing exercises like swings and rows. The only downside to kettlebells is that they are not generally adjustable, meaning you would need to purchase a new set as you get stronger and can lift heavier.
Barbell with rubberized weights and platform (5:32)
A barbell is a great addition to a home gym setup, but certainly not essential. Most key exercises can be done with dumbbells, but a barbell just gives you the option of going much heavier, particularly with lower body exercises such as Squats and Deadlifts. If you do opt for a barbell, I would also recommend getting rubberized plates, so if you drop the bar you do not destroy the weight plates… or your floor.
Resistance bands (7:02)
The last piece of equipment I would recommend for a home gym is resistance bands. These amazing bits of equipment allow you to do a multitude of exercises, whether you’re at home or traveling. They’re easy to move around, so can be thrown in your suitcase for a vacation or business trip and are easy to use to complete a full-body resistance workout.
