This is actually one of the few horror films to actually scare me right along with Sinister. I think a lot of it was Sosie's performance and the complete and absolute despair that she goes through in this scene and the fact that the movie is all about mental illness, hallucinations and a horrible feeling that something bad is going to happen to you. It was all a little too real. Not that I've ever experienced these things, but the movie sure made me feel like I was.

This is how you do a scary scene. The feeling of hopelessness. An ally is close-by but out of reach, unable to rescue you in time. In front of a horrifying inhuman entity that absolutely wants to do you harm. The dread of not knowing what comes next. This honestly gave me hope that modern horror movies can still be well-made.

everyone talks about the effects when they praise this scene, but I think the sound design is massively underrated. something about how the laugh shifts into a femur breaker-esq scream. I really feel like the subsequent quiet afterwards shows how much confidence and restraint the filmmakers had. most movies would blast the soundtrack to 100, but instead I feel the quiet builds the perfect anticipation for the full reveal of the daemon. I'd also like to add that the little wheezing moans the creature lets out in excitement is just so fucking off-putting. I love it.

It all makes sense now. When Laura started freaking out and choking during her session with Rose, that was actually her seeing the demon and it getting ready to crawl inside and have her kill herself. It’s just that Rose couldn’t see any of it until it happened to her.
