I thought this was refreshing because most media treats a polygraph as absolute--it's a neat tool but there's a reason they don't allow those results in a court of law. It IS possible to lie on a polygraph. It's even possible for it to just be wrong because your biology is triggering it that day (unrelated stress, medical issues, etc).

So him tricking it by avoiding questions and even outright lying at one point is very realistic.

Look I've watched this scene a couple of times and like, Benji nails the interrogation because, only once for my money, does he outright lie.

The discussion he has about sifting through data? A truthful statement: That's what his job is.

Does Benji have an "obligation" to Ethan? No, truthfully and factually, he doesn't. The polygraph won't spike on that.

The "Ethan is still out there and I'm still here answering for it" is also true, in both assertions.

"I owe him nothing" is also factually true: Benji doesn't owe Ethan a thing--he is choosing to help Ethan, but that's not what was asked.

The last one is "we are not friends." That's the only one where you can say that Benji is lying. Factually, Benji is doing tremendous legwork for Ethan's investigation behind the scenes, and that is because he and Ethan are indeed friends. My theory is the polygraph spikes, ever so slightly, because of that statement on their friendship. But Benji still does enough to keep Hunley off his back, and it's masterful on his part.
