Baltic nations switch from Russian power grid to EU network • FRANCE 24 English

The three Baltic states on Saturday cut ties with Russia's power grid to join the European Union's network, the culmination of a years-long process that gained urgency with Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – all former Soviet republics that are now in the European Union and NATO – had wanted to block Russia's ability to geopolitically blackmail them via the electricity system.

Commenters focusing on the higher cost of Western European electricity are missing the point. This cutoff was done for energy security, not price. The Baltics clearly believe that the Russians would use access to electricity as a weapon, and they did not want to be susceptible. Makes a lot of sense as a precaution based on their fear, whether or not it is a justified fear.

Guys, *Baltics bought most of their power from Sweden (and less from Poland) for years already.* This changes nothing mostly. Prices of energy won't change.
I'm tired of seeing comments like: "NoW yOu WiLl PaY mOrE" - nope, we already do pay more and belong to NordPool, etc since 2015. And it's worth it.

Many here do not realize that we used BRELL for synchronisation and not for electricity supply. BRELL worked as UPS power unit for us.

I'm surprised it was done so late. I thought Baltic States were integrated into EU system long ago.

You can only blackmail a country with blackouts or turning the gas off only once, just once. From there on you have lost your customer for many decades who was paying you 6 figures every single day.

Energy independence should be the main agenda of the EU at that point.
