A Tour inside a Belarusian Village House | Easter Celebrations

I never thought I would make any tour into a village house soon since there is much trouble with our house lately. But my godmother kindly agreed to open the doors for you. She would be so glad to know that her house can be viewed by so many people.

My curiosity about the lives of average Belarussians began when Belarus was thrust into the international spotlight showing protests after your presidential election in 2020. The media tends to portray such things in polarized terms, showing the conflict only. I was keen to see beyond that, to the people.

It took some time for the algorithms to figure out what I wanted to see but I am grateful that they have now delivered your vlog.

Your village and country are breathtakingly beautiful. It's the kind of life that my mother's side of the family had for many generations.


They were Mennonites and after the start of their religion in the 16th century they gathered in large, insular colonies in central and northern Europe. Most of my ancestors lived for 250 years in Prussia (near present day Gdańsk, Poland), before 228 families migrated as a large group to crown land set aside for them on the big island in the middle of the Dnipro river in present day Zaporizhzia, Ukraine by Catherine the Great in 1787 after the Russo-Turkish war and the takeover of the area from the Ottoman empire. They were pacifists and refused conscription so when that happened in south Russia after one hundred years they all moved again, this time to the US, Paraguay and Canada, where my grandparents and mother were born. Hard working people who lived entirely off the land for generations.

There will always be a place for people to work and live from the bounty of the land. Thank you for the tour and for your openness and eternal optimism.
