Antigua and Barbuda Description

Antigua and Barbuda are in the Lesser Antilles and are part of the Leeward Islands chain. Two bigger islands Antigua, and Barbuda and a few smaller islands are combined to make this country, Smaller Islands are owned by clubs and wealthy individuals. Antigua and Barbuda are 63 km apart.
Neighbours are Saint Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla (UK), Montserrat (UK), Saint Barthélemy (France) and Guadeloupe (France).
The capital and largest city is St. Johns Located in Antiqua
It is the 14th smallest county with an area of 443 sq km. The largest island in Antigua with 281 km² in area and Barbuda covers 161 km2.
Mount Obama is the highest point with a height of 402 meters. It used to be known as Boggy Peak.
There are no notable natural lakes; Potsworks Reservoir functions as a source of water for domestic and agricultural use.
Antigua is famous as “the land of 365 beaches,” – one beach for every day of the year!
The population of about 96,000 making it the 13th least populace country, about 94,000 of them call the island Antigua home. About 2000 people live on the island of Barbuda.
A quarter of all Antiguans, live in the capital St. John’s
English is the official language
Cricket is a famous sport like many other British colonies, but in Antiqua, it is a way of life.
Antigua was first inhabited by the Cibonies in 3000 BC, then Arawak from Venezuela came in around 1200 and then Kalingo also known as the Caribs settled in around 1400.
Christopher Columbus visited Antigua and named it after a Church in Spain - Santa Maria de la Antigua, but the Spanish didn’t settle the island
English settlers from St Kitts started a settlement in Antigua in 1632
Christopher Codrington started a sugar plantation in Antigua in 1674, 10 years later he expanded to Barbuda and imported African slaves to work in the plantations.
Slaves in Antigua were freed in 1834
British set up the West Indies Federation to administrate the British Caribbean territory
Antigua and Barbuda become a self-governing state within the British Commonwealth
Antigua and Barbuda became a fully independent country on 1 November 1981.
Hurricane Luis hit the islands in 1995, claiming 75% of all homes and ending development by 10 years.
Hurricane Jose hit the island in 1999 and caused extensive damage.
Hurricane Irma hit the islands and destroyed 95% of Barbuda’s buildings and infrastructure, leaving Barbuda "barely habitable"
Antigua and Barbuda’s GDP is 2.7 Billion ranked 173rd in the world, and GDP per Capita is about $29, 000.
The currency is the East Caribbean dollar,
American University of Antigua College of Medicine is another source of revenue. The university employs many local Antiguans and the approximate 1000 students
Antigua and Barbuda also uses an economic citizenship program to attract wealthy high-income earners as they also don’t have to pay any personal Tax.

I traced my family ancestry to here. The surname Anthony and Mingo family blood line is from here. My DNA test came back as African, European and Mexican Native American.
