Daihatsu DISASTER! The TRUTH About How Bad the RUST Was!

In the last instalment we gave @HubNut and @misshubnut some welding lessons. Their goal was to fix a rusty patch that had appeared in the rear arch of the Daihatsu Charade (Chemmy). Unfortunately, the rust in the rear arches turned out to be a lot worse than they thought. A LOT WORSE. As Ian and Carly have just started their welding journey, Lewis is taking over to get the car back up to full roadworthy-ness. You can see the progress in the upcomming episodes over on the @HubNut Channel. Can we avoid a Daihatsu DISASTER, can we save Chemmy from the scrapheap??? Tune in and find out!

Great video and effort taken to repair this car. At the end of the day, I don't care about repair vs replacement values if I like a car. Who are we to judge what is and is not viable for someone else who also loves their car just as much? If someone is willing to pay for the work to be done, why not let them go ahead and do it?

If people constantly looked at repair v replacement costs, we'd have far fewer classics around as every car goes through the "not financially viable" stage at some point in its life. Classic car restorers should, in my opinion be more on board to repair things at this stage as there will become a time when things do rise in value.

Bless you for keeping Carley's Dihatsu alive for another year, yes, a lot of us would have had it straight down to the scrapper, yes, it's a horrible car, but it's Carleys "horrible car" and she loves it.

Just spent the last few days in Wrexham North Wales driving a VW UP courtesy car whist my ID3 was in for some fettling. The UP was the best small car I have ever driven, small, simple, nimble and dead easy to drive. If you can get a good early one with no rot then that would be a far better vehicle than the Daihatsu and far easier for Carly to drive. No point in being sentimental, Japanese cars of that era have a design life which you have exceeded by some margin. I would view it as a death trap.

The main reason is that this car is so important Miss Hubnut is hight impaired and it us difficult for shorter people to find a car they can actually drive and Miss Hubnut can drive this Daihatsu easily and she will get her drivers license and have a car she will be able to drive and this makes this Daihatsu priceless and thank goodness lan and Carly know you very nice people at Whiteland Restoration

In the real world that car is scrap - rotten as a pear 🤣 Thankfully this HubNut so sensible isn't an option

My goodness! A rear end collision, pre-repairs, doesn't bear thinking about.

I am sorry to see the state, the repairs will get it another year.

My advise to Carley and Ian, is get through your test. An start to look for a replacement

As someone who's renovating a vehicle that has deep and irreplaceable sentimental value to me, but will never be worth what I'll end up spending on it, and on which I'll have spent hundreds of hours by the time I've finished - I completely understand the mindset of why you'd want to keep this car on the road.

Hopefully this balances out all the "why not scrap it" (or worse) comments from people who don't get it.

“We know where they live!” - a chilling comment, no doubt leading to a Jaguar X-type, Mk1 Ford Ka, and all sorts of notoriously rusty old tat being delivered by the HubNuts to Whiteland Restorations for “minor fettling”. 😱

Fantastic progress. What great friends to have. Feeling the love. Lots of sealing to do before winter, weather proofing will extend the cars life, so, an absolute must. Well done everyone @Whiteland Restorations.

get some waxoil behind thiose panels asap in spring time, heat it up on a gas ring with the lid off and dilute it 50/50 with turps before spraying it into the chassis rails.

Cut the cord now and scrap the car. Once rust like that has set it you'll find it needing welding every year. I have a customer with a MK2 Fiesta and he refuses to get rid of it. Every year he spends £400-500 on welding as the subframe and sills quietly rust away.

It's incredible, what can lay hidden behind a pretty exterior. And this is a prime example of why you should never by a car just based on the fact that it passed its last MOT.
