If you were watching your favorite show on November 22, 1987, you might have been interrupted by Max Headroom. Well, not exactly him.
During WGN’s Nine O’Clock News in Chicago, everyone’s TV went black… and then they saw a silent figure dancing around in a Max Headroom mask. The signal hijacking took place for 28 seconds and was cut off by engineers at the station by switching the broadcast frequency. Later on at 11:20 that same night, an episode of Doctor Who on WTTV was crashed by the same individual. This time, it lasted for around a minute and a half and he had quite a bit to say. He even exposes himself and gets spanked with a flyswatter by someone dressed in a French maid outfit.
Experts determined it would have taken sophisticated knowledge, very expensive and powerful equipment, and direct line of sight of both broadcast towers. Law enforcement investigated the signal hijackings but turned up nothing. No one has ever come forward to claim responsibility. To this day, THE MAX HEADROOM INCIDENT remains a mystery.
