AMC 20 One Piece Axle Upgrade | Rebuild Part 5 | Jeep CJ7 | Project Rowdy Ep045

This is a rebuild of my AMC 20 Narrow Track Rear Axle. This is Part 5 which includes installing the Moser One Piece Axle Kit. This video will include the installation of the Moser Engineering 1-piece Axle Kit (MSR-CJ-S) that I purchased from Summit Racing.

This video series will be available in a unique YouTube Playlist and will include the following upgrades:
- Weld the Axle tubes to the Differential Housing (strength)
- Drum to Disc Brake Conversion
- Clean and Paint the Housing
All of this is being done to prepare this axle to be reinstalled in my 1979 Jeep CJ7 which is slated to for an LS LM7 5.3L Engine swap.

Project Rowdy is a restoration on a 1979 Jeep CJ7 V8 Golden Eagle.

Great set of videos. I'm taking out a troublesome locker and replacing with spider and side gears on a CJ7 that I have just purchased. The trouble is, it's already had solid shafts installed some time ago. I'm also having to replace wheel bearings (as showing signs of ware), seals and spacers but I have no instructions. So this video has been priceless. Pulled the retainer ring off with my press but couldn't get behind the bearing. I have had to take a grinder to the original bearings. Cutting the cage which releases the rollers, enough to get the outer race off. Then heat up the inner race enough for it pull off with the back of a claw hammer. (just for those faced with the same thing)

I’ll re watch. I have a 78 in college, and just turned 50 and got an 82, with a 78 304 (I couldn’t go Chevy like you, but all good, just that nostalgia for me). I just picked up an AMC 20 and D30 Wide Track (mine has NT all drum, so that’s not 82, ha). And I’m going to follow just about your every step here on this AMC 20, wish you did the D30 rebuild before your TC, ha, so I could follow that. Great videos, much appreciated.

if you dont have a press. put those axles in your chest freezer over night, then put the bearings in the oven at 350 for one hour. just drop the bearing on to the shaft, it will drop right into place. just did mine and it worked great.

How do you remove the shaft bearing to get the original brake plate off the original shaft?

How far do you press the bearing on? My replacement axel has a small ridge that jumps the size just barely larger towards the wheel. Do you press it all the way to that?

The Mosers are a great upgrade for the Model 20. Just out of curiousity... was there any consideration to converting to disc brakes? That certainly would have been the time to do it. Realize it does add a little complexity to Project Rowdy... that would have been a worthy upgrade. Did it my 20, and again when I went from the AMC 20 to a Dana 60. By the way... didn't notice in prior videos that you were in the Atlanta area. N. GA (Canton) myself!

Did you happen to notice a gap between the spacer ring and inner seal when you drove it in the housing? I need two new seals and am trying to find them locally without ordering. Would you happen to have an alternate part #?
