I love getting a look at how someone else's workflow for painting looks. I've never used black gesso, didn't know that was a thing. I'll have to try it out. Also neat to know that there's the painting from on-site, and then he made it into a giant painting where he got a bit more creative freedom built upon his experience painting the small plein air painting. Interesting. Topic in the interview on tens of millions of $ at auction, true it is an investment money game for the living current 'blue chip' artists. However it has to be considered many of those artists some giants, in their time, have passed; van Gogh, Picasso, Bacon, Warhol.
