History in a Minute is back!

California is named after the mythical island of California, which was popularized in the 16th century novel "Las Sergas de Esplandián" by Spanish author Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo. In the novel, California is described as a land of gold and precious stones, populated by beautiful Amazonian women who wielded weapons and ruled without men. When Spanish explorers arrived in the region now known as California in the 16th century, they named it after the mythical island due to the similarities they perceived between the two lands. However, the origins of the name California remain somewhat disputed, and there are alternative theories regarding its etymology.
