Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Interpolating in Excel from Bob Umlas for our 2000th podcast episode.

Welcome to the MrExcel netcast, where we bring you the latest and greatest tips and tricks for mastering Excel. In this episode, we have a special treat for you as we celebrate our 2000th episode! That's right, we've been bringing you Excel knowledge for over 2000 episodes and we're not stopping anytime soon. In this episode, we have an amazing interpolation trick from the one and only Bob Umlas.

But before we get to Bob's trick, I want to share a quick tip with you. Sometimes in Excel, there's a long and tedious way to do things, and then there's a shortcut that will blow your mind. In this case, we're talking about straight line regression. Instead of using the Linest T-array formula and another function to generate the next six years of data, you can simply select the original numbers and use the Fill Handle to drag and fill in the rest. It's that easy!

Now, let's get to Bob's trick. We have the first and last numbers, but we need to fill in all the numbers in between. Instead of manually typing them in or using a complicated formula, Bob has a simple solution. Just put the first number, the last number, and all the empty cells in between. Then, select the entire range and go to Home, Fill, Series. Click OK and voila! The numbers are filled in with the correct increment. It's a game-changing trick that will save you time and effort.

In honor of our 2000th episode, I want to take a moment to thank all of our loyal viewers who have been with us since the beginning. To celebrate, I'm not going to pitch my book this time, instead, I want to recommend Bob's two books, "Excel Outside the Box" and "More Outside the Box". These books contain 75 unbelievable techniques that will take your Excel skills to the next level. And for our 2000th episode, I'm offering both books for just 20 bucks, or 2000 pennies. Plus, you'll get electronic versions while you wait for the physical copies to arrive.

So there you have it, an amazing interpolation trick from Bob Umlas, a quick tip for straight line regression, and a special offer for our 2000th episode. Thank you for watching and being a part of our journey to mastering Excel. Don't forget to hit that "i" on the top right-hand corner to grab Bob's books and continue expanding your Excel knowledge. See you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.

(And I had No Idea about the fill-within action. Wow. Slick!)

That is a very cool trick that I had never seen before. The only thing that makes it slightly less useful is that the first and last cells cannot contain formulas. Oh well, still quite useful.

Congrats Mr. Excel on your 2000th! It's been a fun ride. I have a question for you on a different subject. How can I make a slicer work on a regular pivot table (not Power Pivot) that is from a different data source? The slicer has the Fiscal Year and Quarter and the disconnected pivot table has a report filter/page field with the Fiscal Year and Quarter...so the slicer should make the report filter/page field of the disconnected pivot table change accordingly.

How come 2009 numbers ($108, 150) at time 1:05 in your first trick is different from the second trick ($103, 945) at time 1:53 ?  Maybe I'm not understanding correctly, the two tricks are not related?
