Produced by AMT in 1973 with collaboration from Jo-Han, the 1971 Mark Donohue AMC Javelin AMX by AMT was a special model that represented the award winning efforts of the Roger Penske and driver Mark Donohue team.

On today's Monster Hobbies Model Car Garage we will be looking at the 1971 Mark Donohue American Motors Javelin AMX by AMT. This is a model car unboxing video.

In 1970 new Javelin team owner Roger Penske and driver Mark Donohue would breathe new life into the AMC team. Donohue drove the Javelin to three victories, with AMC finishing second overall in the Manufacturers' Championship. In 1971, of the ten races that the Over 2.5L Class cars participated in, Donohue won seven of them, including the final six races in a row, with AMC winning the Manufacturers' championship for the first time ever. In the final race of the season, Javelins finished in first, second and third place, with George Follmer becoming the only other Javelin driver to win besides Donohue.

The 1971 Mark Donohue American Motors Javelin AMX Model Kit by AMT first came out in 1971 From Jo-Han as the Javelin AMX Pro Stock Racer. In fact, Jo-Han released three versions of the 1971-1974 AMC Javelin - a factory promotional model kit without an engine or opening hood, the advanced "oval track race car" versions, and the funny Car dragster versions.

The model car was upgraded annually and was in production from 1971 to 1976 and included some basic changes in rear bumper and grilles. AMT borrowed the mold to make this car in 1973, along with a 1974 stock version, however Jo-Han offered this kit as George Follmer's car in 1972. - So if you really want to hunt down the entire Penske Trans Am Race Team, it isn't entirely impossible.

The AMT 1971 Mark Donohue American Motors Javelin AMX model car kit includes a 23 piece Factory Stock 390 C.I. AMC engine with a single carburetor engine, and ram air air cleaner that lines up with the bulge in the hood. The five piece exhaust headers and pipes extends into the length of the chassis and ends underneath the doors. Jo-Han made some great model kit motors and this one is no exception!

The interior is of the bucket variety with separate bucket seat with seven piece roll cage, four piece fire extinguisher, three piece floor shift lever with lock out lever, racing instrument panel with notches removed for the roll cage, racing steering wheel and column, firewall and brake master cylinder. The interior bucket includes locator pieces for both the windows and hooks into the back end of the body. All of these hide nicely once the model is assembled.

The wheels are great recreations of the "Rallye" style 6-spoke mag wheels but my tires were replaced with some from a Monogram kit, so I can't make a comment about the original tires.

Proportionately, Jo-Han captured the look of the 1971 Javelin perfectly. While the completed model will look great on the shelf, it is missing some parts to make it accurate, even for a stock Javelin. One thing missing is the under-hood fender braces which start at the firewall and "V" out to the upper shock towers. It is also missing the fender cross brace which runs parallel to the firewall in front of the engine air cleaner. Finally, there are a few racing accessories which are also missing from under the hood that the real Mark Donohue car has.

The chassis is a simple casting that includes all of the parts molded in place like the front lower A-Arms, transmission bracket, rear leaf springs, drive shaft and differential and gas tank.

Despite the missing components, you will love building this kit.
