I mean if I was flying an airplane I would be pretty damn worried.

solution: carry a really fucking powerful flashlight.

I’d google how to land an airplane and then YouTube would give me 3 unskippable 15 second ads and I’d die

Ways to find runway:
1. Dont fly at night
2. Open your phone and use google map/apple map or any map, on satellite mode and u can see the road
3. Buy the admin game pass from that one Roblox game and make it day
4. Land anywhere(it’s still Earth)

Night flying requires extra precautions, like more altitude and planning for potential emergencies.

Idea: you lost your engine, not your lights and avionics, if you have GPS use GPS and turn on navigation and taxi lights to get the best possible view of the ground

Risk management at night, more altitude (atleast MEA preferably more) and routing to stay close to airports. Synthetic vision always helps. Fore Flight has a fantastic glide range advisor. Oh yeah, have atleast one PT6. 😊 Night flying only requires a little more risk mitigation to be done safely.

Altitude is your friend. Your flight profile should match your risk asessment. That goes for your preflight too.

In the army we have nvg's, landing light, and a searchlight. Might be worth investing in lol

Night vision seems like a good investment, not even pricey compared to everything else

One possibility for consideration, is since you own an aircraft, take out a small personal loan, and get yourself at least one good night vision tube, and a soft cap for it that way if your engine goes out and it's night, you still have a hope and hell of being able to see the ground.

It also depends on your airplane wheels and how big the airplane is and how many passengers there’s a lot to take an account

1. Satellite imagery is high quality enough to find a good landing zone
2. You have landing lights that are powerful enough to see the ground before it's too late to divert usually
3. There are other ways to see the ground if there is cloud cover too like lidar units and extra stuff you can install on your plane to see ground contour

Flying at night in a small aircraft is definitely more dangerous but I think I would still do it in a pinch.

I don't fly single engine piston at night for this reason (unless it has a ballistic parachute), but I'm surprised you don't even like to fly the TBM at night considering the turboprop is much more reliable (and cruises higher, so you can glide to more runways in the event of engine failure).

I guess you'd want to, in order:
1) plan your flight to avoid night flying over unlit areas
2) figure out before flight where your best landing options will be en route
3) stay high to keep options open if you lose power
4) watch your map for your best options as you go *before* anything happens

He almost got thru the video without saying TBM 850.

My flight instructor once said if you loose your engine at night, find what you think is a suitable landing area. When you're about 500 AGL turn your landing lights on. If you don't like what you see, turn them off. I hated the night cross country solo - I avoid night flights! This was in West Virginia, in the 1990s... at least with GPS or cell phones you might have a fighting chance these days! LOL
