『 Heathen 』 2002 [ Bonus Disc ]

[ Written 1969 - Recorded 1970 - Re-recorded 2002 ]

I took this walk to ease my mind
To find out what's gnawing at me
And wouldn't think to look at me
That I've spent a lot of time in education
All seems so long ago

I'm a thinker, not a talker
I've no-one to talk to, anyway
I can't see the road
For the rain in my eyes

I live above the grocers store
Owned by an Austrian
He often calls me down to eat
And he jokes about his broken English
Tries to be a friend to me

But for all my years of reading conversation
I stand without a word to say
I can't see the bridge
For the rain in my eyes

And the world is full of life
Full of folk who don't know me
And they walk in twos or threes or more
While the light that shines above the grocer's store
Investigates my face so rudely

And my essays lying scattered on the floor
Fulfill their needs just by being there
And my hands shake, my head hurts
My voice sticks inside my throat
I'm invisible and dumb and no one will recall me
And I can't see the water through the tears in my eyes

You can feel the 30 years of life lived between the two recordings of this beautiful song.

My favourite version of just possibly my favourite Bowie song.

Accidentally found this truly amazing track, one of his best…..and that’s saying something.
It’s hard to put into words the beauty of it and how it seeps into your soul.
Soulful and poetic

Why isn't this one of the most popular songs ever? As good as the Beatles best.

Loaded with the weight of passing years. Especially sad now he's gone.

My hands shake, my head hurts and my voice sticks inside my throat I'm invisible and dumb and i can't see the bridge through the tears in my eye's. a day in the life of someone who's always doubting always second guessing any decision in life themselves included. ...isn't that all of us deep inside.

A beautiful melancholy ballad that tells a story!! I truly believe some of his best work this remix version. And truly underrated.

Evokes very sad images; haunting and beautiful at the same time. A soulful version of one of my favorite Bowie songs.

Just can’t stop coming back... it’s such an achingly beautiful memory of the man.

Miss you David

What a great Song after so many years, I can't wait to hear the Toy Album next week, brings me back so many memories of David Bowie. On January 3 you can buy a Bowie stamp, Germany wants to honour him, that is so wonderful. On the stamp you can see him with a guitar

Brilliant track 2002 version my favourite.. On a bonus disc with Heathen when first issued..I think it's about spirits (amongst other things)
