Lyrics:
They build wooden houses on frozen ponds
In the summertime when the water's gone
Diagonal lines in their rolled-out lawns
And the sage always smells so pretty
But nobody cares where the birds have gone
When the rain comes down on Babylon
The stone mason's phone rings all day long
And you gotta get back to the city

I'll build my house up on this rock, baby
Every day with you
There's nothin' in that town I need
After everything we've been through
Me out in my garden and you out on your walk
Is all the distance this poor girl can take
Without listenin' to you talk
I don't need their money, baby
Just you and me on the rock
You and me on the rock

I built paper planes when I learned to fly
Like a 747 fallin' out of the sky
I folded 'em crooked, now I'm wonderin' why
I could always end up in the water
But nobody's askin' why she lookin' so thin
Why she laughin' too hard or why she drinkin' again
A fallen star, she's a paper plane
She was goin' down when you caught her

I'll build my house up on this rock, baby
Every day with you
There's nothin' in that town I need
After everything we've been through
Me out in my garden and you out on your walk
Is all the distance this poor girl can take
Without listenin' to you talk
I don't need their money, baby
Just you and me on the rock

It's an earthquake, it's a harder wind
It's a record breakin' tide and it is rollin' in
It's a big sea, but it can't touch you and me
It's just not water for you
And what are you?
I don't need their money, baby
Woo

I'll build my house up on this rock, baby
Every day with you
There's nothin' in that town I need
After everything we've been through
Me out in my garden and you out on your walk
Is all the distance this old girl can take
Without listenin' to you talk
I don't need their money, baby
Just you and me on the rock

I don't need their money, baby (I don't need their money, baby)
Just you and me on the rock (Just you and me on the rock)
You and me on the rock

I’m packing today for the start of a 5 week road trip with my wife, NYC to Seattle, to LA and back again. What a treat to take a break for a piece of beautiful art. We will definitely be bringing some Brandi with us on the road. If you see 2 ladies in a Subaru driving the back roads of America be sure to give us a wave!

I believe🌹Brandi Carlile to be the greatest female musician, singer, songwriter on earth. I can't box her into Country music, she's created her very own génre, yet to be named because she's so musically advanced in the present day. Brandi Carlile has earned her🎼🎓degree before she was born. I can't wait for her to tour in👏🏻Canada.

While writing her memoir, “Broken Horses” (2021), Brandi Marie Carlile recalled a Sunday school lesson from her childhood that taught her to build her life on a strong foundation of faith via the analogy of building a house on rock. When the COVID pandemic forced her indoors, she contemplated what that sturdy foundation looked like to her as an adult with an uncertain future. That’s when she came up with “You And Me On The Rock” (2021).

She claimed : “When my life changed, when everything that I identify myself by went away, I was just kind of left with a question of, well, is what I’ve built my life on really a solid foundation? I turned to [my wife] Catherine and [our two daughters], and I wrote that song, and I realized that, yeah, even the most intensely self-identifying things can go away, but what my life is really built on, which is faith and my family, IT’S A ROCK, and it’s solid. And then I just used some of the textures, some of the things that were happening in my day, from me being in my garden and her taking her space and going on her walks. [Catherine’s] got the most beautiful English accent that I just could listen to even when she’s bitching at me. I could listen to it all day. And I just realized that they’re my foundation and that anything can change, and that won’t.”

She added : “When the pandemic hit, it was like all of our nightmares just kind of ushered in. Nobody had a backup plan. We’re artists. We don’t have any money saved […]. It was scary because it makes you question whether or not you should’ve had a backup plan. Or what if the thing that makes me me goes away? Am I still me? Those were the questions that were in my mind. It’s like I’m not going to get a round of applause for emptying the dishwasher. But I looked around, and then I saw that what made me me wasn’t ever that.”

“You And Me On The Rock” features backing vocals from Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of the band Lucius. Brandi believed that the tune needed a feminine touch.

She explained : “I just didn’t want men’s voices on it. It happens about once an album. So I did the harmonies. But it just sounded like me over and over again.” Carlile knew she liked the way her voice blended with Wolfe’s and Laessig’s, so she tapped them for the track‼️ 🩵🪨💚

Cannot overstate how sweet and kind and safe this song is (along with the entire album). In These Silent Days just drips with what family and lived in stability truly feels like.

A friend invited me to Brandi's show at the Greek last Saturday and it was the closest thing to spiritual experience I've had since I discovered Beethoven. To have that voice ... and then to sing with such conviction! Instant devotee here, and I'm excited to be on this journey.

This song holds a special place in my heart - it came out around the time I was in the hospital giving birth to my son. It was playing on the radio as I was holding him the first night and I sobbed uncontrollably. It felt so appropriate after an insane labor. Love it so so much <3 <3

My wife has been a Bramily member FOREVER and after always hearing Brandi songs in the house and in the car for years I finally joined her at a concert last month in Salt Lake City and I unknowingly knew every word to this amazing song (and several others!). Hearing Brandi explain the story behind this song just warmed my heart and I swear I am a fan for life! Epic musician and amazing performer!
