Would love to see a video on the actual process of recording those doubles and harmonies. How many layers, panning tips, how much to tune them, etc.

This was a super helpful breakdown, thank you! I was wondering about doubling on verses; most people just say double your vocals and don’t say where or whether that’s all the way through or what😂. My confusion has been cured🙏

Great content as always
Vocal doubling was a key component in nevermind's sound. Cobain gave in when butch vig told him the Beatles did it
Ears love it

5:26 that's interesting, the example that immediately jumped into my head was the song Translating the Name by Saosin (found on the EP of the same name). That song is a masterpiece specifically because it does some of those things. Anthony Green is a master of creating interest and keeping the listener engaged by creating parts that never return and even having multiple lead vocals simultaneously during certain sections. Translating the Name has two completely different verses yet the build of the song feels so organic.

I stopped in 3 minutes to respond to you that you explain in your videos in the best way possible. The fact that you analyze the song together with us is simply amazing. I totally subscribed to your channel!

One of the things I think Jordan hints at but doesn't directly say, but which is lost on a LOT of people in heavier genres, is that these days Rock and Metal ARE Pop music. Exceptions to be made, obviously, but a lot of the song writing, arrangement, production, and mixing tips that work in pop also work in rock and metal. Once you recognize that, some barriers get lifted that block better song writing. I think a lot of counter-culture in rock and metal is uncomfortable with that idea, but it's there nonetheless.

Pretty cool that you mixed some of Silverstein's albums. It was one of my favorite bands growing up!

Thanks! It really clarified some questions and doubts I had about layering vocals and vocal arrangement. Like, should I have doubles on all vocals? Should I harmonize everywhere? I also noticed that the doubles have to be really perfect with the main track so you barely notice it. I was asking myself how far I should go in editing those doubles. Guess close to perfection is the answer. 😉Amazing video. Thanks for sharing that knowledge !

Cool analysis and good tips. I love exploring layering. There are no mistakes in music, except in species counter point and you were living in the baroque and classical periods trying to compose secular music. If it sounds good, vibe with it. Break the mold!

I hear this all over the Burst & Bloom record you did. Which is amazing by the way

I think dropping the harmonies on the first line of the last chorus of the Paramore song is the best example of clever vocal production here: it cleverly simulates the "stripped down" chorus before the final chorus to make that final chorus hit even bigger, which is a common arrangement technique, but also overused af. Streamlining these vocals into one unisono line for a moment has the same effect, but feels fresh and enticing
