Thanks for your presentation here. What's the difference between " manipulation" and "persuasion" ?
Aren't we all manipulators and persuaders of one kind or another, at least some of the time? Where do we all learn this? As children. Children can be master manipulators . They learn pretty early how to manupule/persuade
the parent/s, adults and care givers around them. It's called SURVIVAL.
And, in childhood it wires and children get away with it because they are children. However, what may have worked as children won't necessarily work or be welcomed as adults. As one who works in this field, I usually cringe when I hear the description ", mind
games". It gets casually thrown around like a tennis ball. I cringe because it suggests that people do it consciously and knowingly and deliberately. I.e. controlled manipulation. And, guess what? Most human beings, most of the time DON'T. Firstly, if it's done at all, your or my assessment of it is SUBJECTIVE. And secondly, invariably, vast majority of the time it is done UNCONSCIOUSLY. I.e. NOT deliberately or wilfully. If you feel someone is manipulating or controlling you, DON'T say to them - YOU'RE MANIPULATING or controlling m ". Instead, say to them - I FEEL LIKE I'M being manipulated or controlled", and the see what their reaction is and how they respond to you.
There are of course, people and occupations and agencies who DO consciously and deliberately and knowingly practice and use controlled manipulation and control of the abusive and sinister and dark kind. But, by and large, these people are in the MINORITY.
So please, don't be too quick to jump on the "mind games" bandwagon . And equally, don't be too harsh in your own self critique of it. And, don't be afraid of it.
