Making your own shop tools is not as hard as you might think. In this video, blade smith Walter Sorrells talks about tools he's made to solve knife making problems in his own shop. Some of these tools will be amazingly useful to you....and some will have no value to you at all. But seeing the kinds of jigs, fixtures and other tools that Walter has made for his shop may open your mind to the nearly infinite possibilities that making your own tools could open for you in YOUR shop.

I made my grinding jigs and center scribe after watching you show how to make them in videos way back. Thanks.👍👍👍

Currently I have purchased my anvil, post vise, stick welder, forge, and two sledge hammers. Every other tool in my forge is something that I've made myself. I've never found myself wanting for a tool as long as there's some decent cuts of scrap around.

Nice work. We shared this video on our homemade tool forum last week 😎

Once upon a time nearly every one of every craftsman's tools came from the blacksmith.

I've only made a couple knives but I make other things and I find myself making my own tooling frequently. Most everything I make in the way of tooling is made with a specific task in mind. I get almost as much satisfaction from making chores easier as I do from making my final product.

I like making tools. Sometimes. Tool making can be fun, it can save you money. Making your own tools can also be frustrating, and can cost more than buying the tool in the first place. Pride of accomplishment goes a long way to forgetting the monetary cost. There can be a lot of satisfaction in saying "I built this with tools that I made."

The greatest joy of being a smith or machinist is that you can make the tools you use
The greatest curse of being a smith or machinist is that you can make the tools you use
It's a very old joke. "For only $500 in equipment and 20 hours I can make that $100 tool!"

So these sword fitting tools.... Is this what you use in your how to videos for sword making that you sell?

3:50 - wondering why you don't bore a hole on the lathe prior to shaping handle? Seems the most efficient to me. Plus, it's always centered.

What are you going to do with all those tools? I'm concerned that when I die, nobody I know will know what half of my tools even are, much less what they are worth or who they could sell them to.
