Regarding the idea of Oscar nominations for best cinematography on an essentially studio bound film, "Black Narcissus" comes to mind. It actually won the award that year. Only a handful of shots were filmed outside the set. What people were looking at were wonderful tabletop models of sets, and some glorious matte paintings, done chiefly I believe by the great Peter Ellenshaw.
