“How am I supposed to know if it’s a Jiggy I can get now or if it’s one I have to come back to with a new move I don’t get for another 10 hours?”

That’s the neat part! You don’t!!

Banjo-Tooie is technically a 3D Metroidvania, and that's why I love it. It took what the first game did, which emulated Mario 64, and gave it it's own identity with all sorts of bells and whistles (FPS sections, sports minigames, splitting up, all the transformations, and even PLAYABLE MUMBO) that only added to the experience.

Glad to know there's people out there that love Tooie as well

I know people dislike Banjo Tooie for it’s larger, more complex worlds with elaborate puzzles; but that’s EXACTLY why I love it!

Banjo Tooie is my favourite. The atmosphere, humour, gameplay etc.

I love the original but Tooie is a lot more replayable for me.

For me, I'm a Banjo-Tooie guy. Love both but for me, Tooie is better.

“Why wasn’t this the default speed?”
Most likely cause of the aforementioned platforming difficulty

This is just like having the bunny hood on all the time in Majora's Mask lol

I think this game really influenced the type of games I like now as an adult. I just want to play games where I can explore. I don’t care much for super action packed games.

Thank you. Played this game as a kid twice and never found out about this. Playing it again like this is a very different experience!

The only context in which Banjo Tooie was "too big" was in the sense that it ran pretty badly on the N64 at times. And I still had a blast. I never felt like traversal was a chore, that's what the teleport pads are for. My only actual issue was that navigating was sometimes a bit confusing because the levels have so many interior areas that even after playing it several times I always misremember where certain entrances lead.

I really dislike when people say things like "oh this makes the game actually playable"

However, yes

As much as I love the game, yes

I played both for the first time recently, Kazooie feels like the 'vision' while Tooie feels like the 'ambition.' I think BK is best when it stays simple, but the complexity has its place amongst the classic 64 platformers.

Edit: Unpopular opinion: I actually think Grunty Industries is one of the better worlds in Banjo-Tooie. It's obtuse and initially hostile to navigate, but it feels intentionally designed that way, like finding easier ways to traverse it is a puzzle in and of itself. Compare that to Glitter Gulch Mine or Terrydactyland where they feel difficult to navigate as an oversight. It also perfectly compliments the changing of control with certain characters, particularly the washing machine transformation. Admittedly, a series of analysis videos by Veegie helped me in seeing the appeal behind Grunty Industries, and now I appreciate it far more now than I used it.

Original comment:
I miss cheat codes in video games. Some games still do them, UFO 50 is a good recent game that does something like that, but stuff like this feels, more often than not, stuff that's relegated to DLC (paid or otherwise)... or maybe a preorder bonus or some nonsense.

This works for the N64 version, but because it's a "cheat" code as opposed to an unlockable code, it blocks saves on Xbox.

Been watching lots of Banjo-Kazooie videos lately, I think I need to replay them now, especially Tooie since I honestly don't think I ever beat that one back in the day lol.

I didn't know about this code! I think it's really cool that the NSO version has something that makes it worth playing over the Xbox version. I know I'll definitely be loading it up now.

I think when you boil things down, Banjo Kazooie was about rewarding players for COLLECTING things. Tooie on the other hand rewards EXPLORATION with things to collect.

The direction of the games are very different in terms of level design, but for me I loved Tooie more because as a kid all I wanted was to get lost in an immersive world with zanny and charismatic characters. I loved going to random worlds and just goofing off, even if I already completed that world. And sometimes that behavior would rewarded by finding new things about the world that only added to my immersion (such as the interconnectivity of levels and figuring out if I could go through most of the worlds without hitting Isle o' Hags or using the train once).

Tooie just FEELS better to play than BK, the movement is soooo much smoother. That alone is a big reason why I think Tooie is the better game, but I could go on and on lol it's the PERFECT sequel though imo
