The Dark side of the Shipping Industry - Ship Breakers

preview_player
Показать описание
In a nut shell, 'ship breaking' is where large numbers of used ships are sent to developing countries like China, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Turkey, they are systematically broken down by the cheap labor hired by these ship breakers.

Workers are not trained, they are not supplied PPE and they get paid about $1 per day to work 12 hours every day, 7 days a week.

In all societies, the world around you tries to kill and eat you everyday. In San Jose ca, the average house price is 1 million, and believe me there are many average houses. Rents can be $6000-$8000 a month. Even for a good paying job, that doesn't leave much left for life.

This is very sad. The population of these countries are massive, thus, human rights have no values nor a concern. Very sad and tragic.

There is enough wrong with this to blame "everyone"! This would never happen in the USA due to the massive regulations that face industries, regulations that don't exist in those countries. The cost, due to regulation, to "break" ships here, would drive the cost of steel through the roof. I'm not saying it's ok to do it anywhere else. Our desire to reduce cost of production, high labor costs, and regulations by the EPA, force local industry to purchase steel from these cess pools/ death camps! The world pounds on the US for its use of fossil fuels, yet these countries are allowed to turn the oceans into toxic dumps! These countries and companies know what chemical hazards are in these ships, but they don't care! Ironic that we are shown documentaries that make it look like these cultures are "one" with nature! And before anyone feels the urge to "thumbs down " this or give a hate comment, understand you are responsible for this too. I'm almost 100% sure you have purchased something made with steel that originated from these countries, thus contributing.

It might be generally said that if these women would birth only one and not 3.5,   lives would improve over a generation or less.  Of course this oversimplifies matters but will in time absolutely improve general conditions.

alot of the footage of workers with hardhats could always be a "put on". Other videos tell of workers saying when outsiders show up they are given hardhats and safety gear, then taken away when the outsiders leave.

The UN human right group should send and convince Indian government to take responsible

Its not that there is no safety equipment. Its the fact the bosses will fire people for being safe because it takes longer. Very sad situation.

No safety wear?? Goodness, it must be dangerous working in such places. I cant imagine the kind of health problems the workers would develop. Sad

What they didn't show is that these ship owners don't take remove chemicals and toxic waste from the ships before they send them to these ship breakers. They don't give a shit on their safety because their backyard is nice and clean. Just send all the garbage to the people that don't know any better or has to do it just to stay alive.

I feel really bad for these poor workers what a horrible environment to live in work in...we're in the 21st century and it's like they're living in the 19th century

You dont swing the boom on a crane without raising the cable or block. And looking where it is headed. Like into a guys head.
