Illegal in the US? ... what special interest lobbied for that one?

Yes! Thank you! If we truly want cleaner and safer energy, we can’t do it affordably without this precise message!

My grandfather worked on the project that discovered black glass, the type of glass Joe talks about there. He had a chunk of it at his house, I don't think it had the stuff in it. He worked for Dupont in the 40s and was taken by the US govt to work on the nuclear weapons development program that lead to little boy. He died of a very aggressive form of cancer in 3 months. He was a huge light in our lives and his loss hit the family really hard. No one knew how the cancer came till my uncle started to research what happened at dupont. Somehow he found out about the military stuff. And a few years later the US govt admitted he worked on the Manhattan project. They gave my mom and her brothers and sisters, 7 in all, a total of two thousand dollars. He was a great man. His laugh and smile would fill a room. He sang bass like like a boss. He was sailor on a US submarine as a young man. He was married for 51 years. He liked to play golf w Mr Gaddy and his other friends. He was a gentle soul. Very smart and tended to worry about his loved ones. He was one of my best friends and we all miss him very much. Rest in peace grandpa, I still have that picture of you as a young man in my office. I'm older now than u were when it was taken. We miss you.

Nuclear physicist here... Spent fuel isn't vitrified to reduce its radioactivity. You can't reduce radioactivity, you can only shield it (or force it to transmute, which is impractical). Vitrification prevents the fuel migrating or 'leaking out' when it's buried in the ground, as over thousands of years glass isn't as likely to migrate as concrete, which slowly degrades. We also coat the vitrified HLW (high-level waste) with a special type of clay called Bentonite, which is quite malleable and keeps the core intact in the event of external shear forces like tectonic activity.

It's crazy how good nuclear power is and how much push back there is to it in the Us.

Could you do a full video on this? Could you also cover why it's illegal and or how it became illegal?

Humanity shot itself in the foot so badly. Imagine where nuclear technology would be now if leading industrial nations had kept investing heavily into research.

??? So many questions, I think this needs a long video

It's really criminal what the oil companies, and government have done to the nuclear energy industry.

Worked as a mechanical test engineer at a shipyard, overhauled the USS Nimitz. I wasn't in that particular branch of engineering very long. very good short.

It irritates me to no end when I hear people say they want less fossil fuels yet yet completely disregard nuclear, we've had alot of time to refine the process and you'd basically have to deliberately make a reactor explode. And this video has shown we can recycle and we can make radioactive waste safer.

It's simple. Current politics don't want it to be safe and accessable, they want it to be kept dangerous and out of consideration

"reduces the "reduces the half life".

Allow me to reassure you, if the half life drops by 60%... It's quite a bit more radioactive

Thanks for covering nuclear, Joe. Keep it up. Nuclear will be a HUGE part of our green future.

The US: “No! That’s illegal!”
Also the US: “let’s just dump this radioactive waste and let it seep into the water source”

Idk about y'all but my immediate thought was "seems like storing and labelling nuclear material as 'waste' is a convenient way to ensure the country always has a stockpile while simultaneously being able to claim that we only have a certain amount of material in accordance with nuclear treaties when really 3 mile island is basically a major repository"

The US. The nail in mother earth's coffin.

I find these shorts to be interesting and informative. I would advocate for you to continue making them. Screw all the people making negative comments. You're not really losing any subscribers by doing this. And you might be gaining quite a few. I have followed you for many years and I see no reason to stop now. Keep up the good work Joe!
