37 KEY Differences Between THE WITCHES (1990) and THE WITCHES (2020)

The Witches was one of my favorite spooky kids movies so I thought it would be fun to see the main differences with the new HBO Max version starring Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, and Stanley Tucci based off the novel by Roald Dahl.

The book sure was heckin’ traumatizing. You know it ends with the mouse boy asking his grandmother how long he’ll live, now that he’s a rodent? When his grandma tells him probably no more than 9 years (because he’s a “magical” mouse), he responds with:
“Good, then we’ll *die* together. *I don’t want to live any longer than you do.”*

You just can’t beat Anjelica Huston as the grand high witch the roll was for her. Just like you can’t beat her roll as Morticia in the Addams Family she a legendary actress

No offense to Chris Rock but his narration parts, made me feel like I was watching "Everyone Hates Chris"

I can't help but think that nowadays women in Hollywood (especially A-listers like Anne Hathaway) aren't allowed or are afraid to be seen as ugly. So the 2020 version thinks that bald and sharp toothed are the only things to do to Anne to make her "other" and monstrous. But the 1990 version went all out with warts and gnarled skin and protruding facial features for Angelica.

Nothing can top Angelica Houston sorry. That’s a classic

When the original witch pushed the baby down, it really showed how cruel the witches are. That brings so much depth in her character.

Nothing can beat Angelica Houston saying “child is no longer a child...”

I think Angelica had an air of aristocracy and old Hollywood glamor that Anne doesn’t quite have.

Angelica Houston’s witch actually looked like a witch, Anne Hathaway looks like an alien

Anne Hathaway was good but Angelica Houston did more with the role with less screen time

I’m 21 and the original witches still freaks me out lol. The cinematography and prostetics are just unnerving to look at. The new one just looks like a cgi kids movie.

Ann’s transformation didn’t go far enough, she’s too pretty. In the original, she went from pretty to 100% witch. Hollywood seems to be scared to make women ugly. Like if they’re in a fight they still make them pretty with just a few cuts, instead of making her look actually hurt

when erica gets put into the painting.... truly one of the creepiest moments in film. the 90's version is so much better.

Angelica Houston is a marvel. She is simple terrifying because her calm demeanor more aptly covers her true malevolence in a way Anne Hathaway does not. In fact, it would have been great for Angelica to some how make a cameo in the remake..

The original scared me as an 8 year old and at 20 years old, there is still something so damn sinister and unbelievably real about the 1990 version. I've only seen a few clips of the new one, but somehow I think it lacks the scary factor.

I haven't watched the new one but the original high witch looks soooo much creepier.

The thing that bothers me the most is how the Grand High witch looks. Even though the more recent one has better effects, the Angelica Houston one was way more terrifying.
