Fujiwara no Mokou, one of the most polarizing characters between canon and fanon. On one hand, she's a friendly loner who has beef with Kaguya, and on the other hand, she's an antisocial pessimistic smoke addict that... really likes Kaguya.
Yeah no Gensokyo ain't surviving a Fanon Mokou outbreak, for as long as Kaguya exists (forever).

First sprite animation of 2023, this was a fun one to make. There is less animation and more "cinematics" in this, but regardless I wanted to have more practice with effects and such. After all, it's all about the journey, not the destination ;)

Mokou in canon is essentially a hobo with too much free time. Like, she let people assassinate her for a test of courage and let herself be possessed by Mamizou just to try it out.

I like how this is one of the few fanons i actually dont hate by much. Couldn't say the same for most of fanon versions unfortunately

Kaguya is basically the deadpool to canon mokous wolverine.
They hate the other naturally but bond by being able to tear eachother to shreds.

Another Funny thing about Mokou is that she's one of few characters (maybe the only character) in Memories of phantasm where she's actually based on her canon side comparing to the rest of the cast who's obviously based on their fanon side.

Fittingly, a lot of Pre-Lolk Lunarians also have some very wildly different fanon versions.

Kaguya gets interpreted as either a shut-in (based on the lore that she had to stay inside to survive, which until this last couple of years people could only see as something done by choice) or a terrible person (by taking Mokou's early description of her at face value).

Yorihime and Toyohime get treated as being racist (because we had heard that Lunarians are like that and nobody realized the irony of profiling the first citizens they saw).

And Eirin... gets the shaft.

Fanon: Bad ass immortal that will pick a fight with anyone and is very suicidal and loves Kaguya.
Canon: Very chill homeless person and is only disrespectful to Kaguya and sometimes to the people of Eientei and wants to kill her.
Crazy how if you think about it, other than Kaguya she dosn't pick fights with anyone, everyone pulls up on her. She just chilling then suddenly someone wants smoke.

I've always wondered how the touhou fandom sees a character and completely 180's their personality.

Fanon Mokou tends to vary from what I've seen. But the major thing all variations of Fanon Mokou share is their hatred for Kaguya and the desire to kill her in some capacity.

That said, nowadays it seems Mokou and Kaguya are friendly rivals (or possibly even just friends) instead of sworn enemies given that in Violet Detector/Foul Detective Satori, Mokou says she knows Kaguya sneaks out of Eientei to go to the Human Village and even shows her around the place while confronting the culprit behind everything.

As for ideas for other Fanon VS. Canon, how about Flandre (which can give folks *a lot* of mental whiplash for not keeping up with Touhou), Utsuho, Sakuya and Remilia.

people tends to forget that the pyro part of the fanon is based on the pyro period Moukou had after drinking the Hourai elixir, she literally spent 300y burning everything down. Though now she's more of a chill wanderer than a war criminal

Maybe her fanon depiction is Kaguya’s ideas. 🤔

As much as Mokou and Kaguya say that they hate each other, I don’t think they would be able to (mentally) live without each other.
