I've had the R77 for years. Recently added the 2600+. The cart dumper seems more reliable on the 2600+. The key differentiator for the 2600+, for me, is playing 7800 carts. While a power brick would have been nice for the 2600+, if you're connecting to a TV or near a PC, just plug into a USB on those. If someone only wants an emulation box, the GameStation Pro might a better option than the R77, which is limited to 2600 titles.

2:20 its probably there for TV compatibility, I had a few TVs that didn't play nice if the system was outputting the video signal in 4:3 (didn't matter if it was retro consoles, VCR, DVD player, or what have you), but would display correctly if the output video signal was in 16:9, you would just force 4:3 aspect ratio in the TVs setup menu (this setting is often named differently on different TV brands).

Out of the box the Retron 77 is going to be running stella version 3, and to get the most out of it you're going to want to update its firmware to the community based firmware which is running stella version 6. Atari is also working on the firmware for the 2600+ which will increase game compatibility.

Nice comparison! Both of them are lacking more then they should be imo. I'd rather pay a premium and get an FPGA 2600 console with 100% compatibility than get an incomplete experience for ~100. Maybe one day that'll be an option!

I'm in the UK and have noticed that Action force (gi Joe in the us works where as the us counter part does not. Plays great with the retron 77 ranger controller which I'm sure allows you to play paddle games as well

As someone who doesn’t have either of these consoles I appreciate this breakdown showing the pros, cons, and specs… gives me a much better idea of what I’m looking at.

I might have to get the retron 77 till the 7800 + is released.
Already have one 2600 Atari game on the way from eBay.

Just got my 2600+ in the mail. I do love it, but I’m brand new to the system and these games, getting into them recently on Evercade and Atari50.

I really like the controller that came with it

Great comparison 👏 the it's hard to choose what to live with or with out when looking at these consoles 😅 I just keep playing my 2600 for now 😆

I would pick up a Retron 77 but the paddle issue totally sucks. I still think a modded 2600 might be the best option for total compatibility.

The Hyperkin retro has the Ranger Premium Wired Gamepad that has a paddle for an extra $26 ???

the paddle controls do not work great. too much lag. I played Kaboom on my real 2600 and the 2600+. People really underestimate how lightning fast some of those 2600 games like Kaboom or Dragonfire really are.

Retron 77 - NOPE! Atari 2600+ - NOPE! Atari Game Station Pro - YUP!

Good comparison. But there's one other notable issue with the Retron that needs to be addressed: It's effin ugly 😂
