I was crestfallen when I first heard the news this magnificent facility had suffered catastrophic damage. Thanks for the update. It'd be great to see it rejuvenated.

Arecibo is not only a radio telescope. It is also a radar transmitter receiver. It is responsible for much of the local planetary mapping that's been done over the last several decades.

I consider myself fortunate to have been befriended by many folks in PuertoRico/Borinquen. Arecibo is/was a beautiful space. As a radio amateur, it holds a special place in my heart thru the friendship of Angel/WP4R, who showed us around there over a decade and a half ago. The loss of the dish was heartbreaking. 73 de W8IJN

The telescope was an iconic, unique structure that had an actual purpose. I'll bet that it will be rebuilt. It might look different, but it offers a unique capability and in the grand scheme of things it was actually affordable.

Thank you for the update! I grew up 45 minutes from the telescope and I begged dad to take me again in '97 when I was 8 and GoldenEye came out.😃

It broke my heart when I heard what happened. My sons and nephews had a great time when they visited it, especially after watching the James Bond movie. Hope something is done to fix it.

I visited the observatory in the early 1980s as an IT student when it was only by appointment. I am glad that they are rebuilding the site.

2:00 Correction, there is no dish like Arecibo right now. The one in china is a radio antenna, Arecibo was a radio antenna that was also capable or sending out and receiving radar and was responsible for helping to map out the orbits of many planet killer asteroids. China can listen to radio waves coming from objects in space, Arecibo could accurately measure distance and velocity as well as detect dark asteroids that are difficult to spot with telescopes.

This is not just any observatory, but it has become cultural heritage. I´d love to see it rebuilt.

I became a member of the Seti project in 1985. Since then, until the end of the Seti project, any computer I had owned over those years, until the end of the project, was spent crunching numbers for Seti. These days, I have tried to imagine the expense I paid for keeping my computers online 24/7/365 for Seti. I would imagine the energy costs for keeping my system(s) running all that time is scary...smiles. Anyway...no regrets...and no aliens...YET.

Me thinking he was going to say "I always wanted to see this since 1997... when Contact was in theaters". Oh well.

IIRC, Arecibo was one of the few telescopes that did radar astronomy, and was a massive help in plotting the orbits of asteroids.

Great snapshot of the current state of things, thanks! I first learned of its existence just a few years before you did, but also through fiction - the second season premiere episode of the X-files in fall 1994, which scared me absolutely shitless as a kid. 😄It would be a terrible tragedy if something of comparable resolving power weren't rebuilt in such a unique and radio-quiet location.

I visited Arecibo in 2000 when it was still used for research. An acquaintance of mine, Dr. Joe Taylor did much of the work there on Binary Pulsars that won him and Dr. Hulse a Nobel Prize in 1993. It is sad to see it now. ☹

1:36 I can't find any info on such private initiative to rebuild the telescope. Any sources?

I had dinner with the lead engineer tasked with replacing the damaged cable before the collapse. After a bottle of wine he told us how they had equipment, crew and cable in place and those above him forbid him to make the repair. He was confused and disappointed. When it collapsed, his first question was.
"How was there a drone flying right at the failure point ant just the right time?" The drones have a 20 minute fly time.
From the lead engineers mouthpiece (after wine) ...the collapse was intentional.

Todo para nada. Cómo dejaron que esto sucediera? Algo tan importante y grandioso. Ojalá algún día vuelva el Famoso Observatorio de Arecibo.😔🇵🇷😔

Arecibo died a slow death by underfunding and lack of maintenance over decades. The end was dramatic but in no way unexpected.

I got to see it and it was moving. When we got back down to town told my friend who had lived there for 35 years and had visited the site numerous times couldn't believe it. He never seen it move and was extremely jealous.. lol so sad about its condition today and i agree we need new one. Cause China didn't build theirs for no reason I'll tell you that!...
