Using Wonderware System Platform 2017 Update 1, auto assignment of Attributes, setting up Siemens OI Server and talking to a PLC. Brief overview of InTouch OMI. If you have any questions please feel free to post them.

This isn't intended as a total noob guide to SCADA products, I assume you at least have SP2017 installed and working and have a PLC (Siemens in this case) setup on a benchtop network.

Some understanding of OOP and S95 Model hierarchy will be helpful and a general understanding of SCADA / PLC communications. Wonderware is a huge product and if you are attempting to make a small machine or OEM device this really isn't the product for you. I do feel that the quality of the training materials out there for Wonderware products in general is pretty poor and SCADA / PLC gear in general isn't great.

I've noticed over the last few years that there are three major camps of PLC and SCADA dev and they all have their place and can all learn from each other.

1) The sparkie or controls guy who starts out using a soldering iron and multimeter and gets roped into adding stuff to a controls system.
2) The software Engineer that wants everything to be in Java or VB and doesn't want to be playing with 2.5MB of memory in a PLC
3) The 'big picture' Engineer who wants to make everything re-usable and to make 'one version to do everything'

The first guy tends to hack at code and eventually becomes proficient, he never really learns best practices or how to design from scratch a good project.

Second guy can't write defensive and robust PLC code and likes to use Latching bits, finds the tools and IDEs to be rubbish and is generally frustrated by the limitations of PLC / SCADA work.

Third guy wants to put everything in a custom FB / AddOn Instruction and re-use it everywhere.

System platform really appeals to the third guy, first guy looks and says 'that is wayyyyy too complicated' and the middle guy is looking for a cushy C# programming job in the city without the dirt and noise of industrial controls work.

Me, I think industrial controls are the coolest job in IT / Engineering. Who else gets to make a program to make things move? Robots, Conveyors, Food handling, Beverages, Mining, Power, Wood, Coal, Iron Ore and all the rest of the cool stuff out there. Now with tools like System Platform we can communicate with MQTT and web based stuff, we can design Business Process tools with Skelta BPM and integrate some really awesome stuff.

Things like ESP 8266 devices, raspberry pi's and Arduino are bringing sensors and digital systems to the hands of teens and kids at a bargain price. Linux allows for massive scope playing with operating systems, OpenCV for image processing even in Python! Never have we had better tools to create awesome bits and pieces for making the world better.

The part where Wonderware hosed up on you... classic. We've all faced similar challenges with this software.
