A walking tour of The Drag, West Campus, Austin, Texas (UT Campus Life)

The Drag is a strip of stores and restaurants and bars right off West Campus and along Guadalupe Street in Austin, Texas. The businesses cater to college students who live and shop and socialize along the area. There are apartment complexes mixed in, and the area undergoes a lot of changes. Some popular places to eat include Kerbey Lane Cafe and Dirty Martin's Place, where I found a hamburger, fries and a chocolate shake. They recently demolished the building that was attached to Daniel Johnson's "Hi How Are You" mural (i.e. "the austin frog"). But they kept the mural intact to see another day. Popular places for music in the area include Hole in the Wall, which has been there since 1974, where Shaky Graves, Bob Schneider, Gary Clark Jr. and more hustled on their way up. Another popular spot for music is Cactus Cafe in the student union area of the UT Campus. They have popular ticketed shows and they also have a songwriter open mic every Tuesday, hosted by Jake Farr. Ultimately, I made it to my gig at Industry over on East 6th Street. Good times.
