You could definitely use some liquid soldering flux, it's amazing how well that helps to stick solder to the piece and you'll go a lifetime before using up a container. I have about a tablespoon of it and it has been applied to at least a hundred projects so far.
I'm fairly sure a wire nut without a metal screw is against code, not sure what kind of Chinese factory you imported those from for a handful of change but you'll probably have to switch to a reputable industry brand like Gardner Bender. I wouldn't recommend vintage ones in this case since the metal is probably quite oxidized, further unsafing the connection.
My screwdriver has the same problem, probably will have to do this soon.
