We got into retro gaming as it became full swing when my son was 3 (he's now 7).

At the time, he was just freshly diagnosed with non verbal autism. In those days, he had very, very few things he was interested in and would actually play with you with. He usually just wanted to be by himself, holed up in bed playing with his Amazon tablet.

We discovered that a new retro arcade opened a couple of cities over. He liked watching his grandfather play video games (we got out of gaming at this point because hello...infant then toddler! Like you got time to play video games..). We decided to take him to see if he would like it or get overwhelmed and scream..(this is the risk of trying anything new).

He LOVED it!

He ran around playing all our old favorites from childhood...DK, Pac-Man, Centipede..Street Fighter 2...My husband shot a photo of us both playing Centipede. He was in heaven. He was engaging with us...he was trying to use both hands together (this is a motor skill set back of his. Very typical for autistics at his level of support needs.) instead of just one hand.

This trip was what gave me the idea to use retro gaming as a way to help him develop motor skills and a way into that little world of his doing something we used to love doing as kids.

Fast forward 4 years later, we have 8 consoles (some are those pre loaded game ones like the Genesis 2 for our son's ease of use.) and a small collection of a few of our favorites ranging from NES to Xbox360. He loves playing them with us still, loves going to game cons (our 1st stab at this was So Cal Gaming Expo), and can now successfully complete stage 1 of the original Sonic. It's helping him socially and greatly improving his motor skills, and it's something we as a family enjoy doing.

2000-2001 is when I started picking up all the GI Joes I had as a kid again on EBay. I stopped in let 2002 when I went back into the Army. After I returned to civilian life, I would dig the Joes out for my daughters and I to play with when they were little, and now I grab some of the new packaged stuff for nostalgia purposes. Your channel and the Toy chasers got me into the feels for video games again, had forgotten how big of a deal it was within my growing up and friendships playing. I just picked up a rom emulator to scratch that itch though.

Awesome nostalgic story. Same here with me. I shopped on eBay. But I also went to yard sales and flea markets because that's what my mom and brother did. They also sold at the flea market. I was collecting before it was cool. You could pick up a NES, SNES, Atari, Sega Genesis, etc for a buck. Games were easier to come by. At one time I had 30 plus Atari 2600's and 7800's. Not to mention the bedroom stacked waist high full of everything else. I'm still pissed I sold off a majority of my collection cheap. But good thing is I started back some years back and my kids are into it with me. Everything from NES, GameCube, action figures, and Garbage Pail Kids cards. It's awesome watching them at ahh over the stuff I grew up with.

back in the late 90s early 2000s I used yahoo auctions to buy some games no longer sold in stores. I'm not a collector but I buy what I like.

I think I always collected games. But it was for whatever console I had at the time. There was games I would hold on to even if I didn't have the system to play them on. I would trade games in all the time to get the latest stuff, then regret it later. I believe around 2006 I started to collect more toys and videos games. It was cool back then watching you guys and other YouTubers talk about gaming and collecting. Heck it still is now. I think the first game I purchased that started me collecting retro games was Secret of Evermore. Man the memories.

Nostalgia and loving games are definitely a few of the reasons why I started collecting. But the main reason for me was I wanted to be able to replay my favorite games without having to go looking for them again. lols

Still have my Atari 2600 from when I was a kid. That thing was huge at the time, if you had one everyone wanted to check it out.

That shirt rocks bro. And I've been gaming and collecting since the Atari 2600 days of 1982. Just ended up collecting the first games given to me, then when I made my own money I began to hit up yard sales, video rental stores and thrift stores. How I miss the days of 50¢ NES games. 😎💯💪👍 #OldSchool #ChodeNation #GrandparentsRule

I half expected the games to have fake pigeon poop on them when he stood back up.
