US Department of Defense announces $3B in aid to Ukraine, largest package to date | FULL

U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Dr. Colin H. Kahl announced a new package of $2.98 billion in security assistance to Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) at the Pentagon on Wednesday, in the largest single assistance package that the U.S. has provided Ukraine to date.

Kahl clarified that the USAI assistance will be different from past Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) packages, as it will be procuring the USAI systems from the private sector rather than from U.S. stocks. He added that the money will be used to fund weapons, ammunition, equipment such as drones and military training of the systems for Ukrainian troops.

Responding to questions from journalists regarding Taiwan and Iran, he also discussed the “new normal” of increased military activity surrounding the Taiwan strait following U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the region, as well as recent precision strikes on infrastructure in Syria linked to militia groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The day before, the U.S. urged its citizens to leave Ukraine, saying it believed Russia was preparing to target civilian and government infrastructure in the next few days as the war reached the six-month mark. Ukraine's independence day, the public holiday that also falls six months into Russia’s invasion, is usually marked with a military parade. But fearing attacks on mass rallies, Kyiv has banned public events in the city this year and the streets were much quieter than normal.
