We rescued a severly abused boxer dog once and it also took us about a year to fully gain her trust.

Edit... Giving her an abundance of squeaky dog toys really helped a lot... She was so totally obsessed with them (and usually destroyed them within 10-15 minutes) but somehow it helped her gain trust in us in that we were often giving her the things she just loved so darn much.
