With the entry of the free market into Bulgaria, many Bulgarians have left the country. Bulgaria is one of the poorest and fastest shrinking countries in Europe.

The five children who of Bear handler Radi and his wife have all emigrated. Although Bulgaria was granted the coveted freedom and free market in 2007, many young Bulgarians have nevertheless moved away.

The VPRO is touring Europe and European history. The series 'In Europe, History caught in the act' picks up the thread where the previous one ended: in 1999. Optimism at the turn of the century gave way to fear and confusion following the attacks on the Twin Towers, the credit crisis, an increasing flow of refugees, and an increasingly troubled relationship with Russia. But can you recognize history if you are in the middle of it? If nobody knows how it will end?

The series speaks with witnesses, that without realizing it, ended up in the middle of an important historical event. Every week we publish new videos from the new series and previously broadcast seasons.

In Europe, history caught in the act is a series with Geert Mak by Stefanie de Brouwer and Roel van Broekhoven.

On VPRO documentary you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series.

Bulgarians hate Gypsies but this old gypsy is a decent guy. I wish he'd been my grandad. The 2 grandad's I had were total animals who brutalized both my parents when they were young. I'd be proud to call this nice old man my dedko.

Hullo out there.
Just because one lives in a country for a few years, it doesn't mean that a good and reliable understanding is reached. Furthermore, one needs more than an open mind to understand a country, especially one of the teachers historical places on Earth. I am a qualified sociologist and philosopher from Sydney Uni, yet if I did not have my heart in the subjects, it would have been a waste of time. From my observations I think that it takes at least 12 years of committed participation to begin to understand another land. Hence, it always concern me when I see these 'reports' by journos from UK, Holland, France, USA that report on 'Eastern' Europe, or South Africa, etc.
Well, I don't even know such a place, I.e. Eastern Europe. There is only One Europe.
I would suggest to these 'easy riders' to focus on their own countries and cultures. They know perfectly well that there are plenty of problems for them at home. Instead of culturally degrading places they do not understand. That only annoys the people who live there and instead of being helpful is only adding to the problems, by splitting humanity. It is ugly because it is born in heart that believes that it is 'better than'.
I am a proud international, a Bulgarian bread and born but lived in many different countries and communities. Довиждане, Ross.
