To those saying “She grew up in Africa, ” please understand the numerous messages that you are sending, whether intentional or not.
1) I do not understand even the most basic fact about Africa, which is that it is a continent and not a culture.
2) I do not consider it worth 5 seconds of research to learn even this basic fact.
3) I expect my ignorance to be accommodated and if it is not then I am being attacked.
4) I am ignorant because of 1-3.
5) Despite 4, I still feel a right to correct others on her nationality.
Ms. Rae has a Senegalese father and an African-American mom and grew up in both lands. Embrace the complexity of the global majority.
