Great showing by Al Ahly, for the first time in African history a team lifts the trophy having conceded only ONE GOAL (the one shown here against Young Africans), a fantastic (unstoppable) thunderbolt of a shot in the last second of injury time after the second half!
Imagine, if that final minute had passed without that one goal conceded !?
I wasn't thrilled about the football we played this year (our level last year was higher and we played much "sexier football"); because we were too cautious at times offensively (that final game is a glaring example), but defensively we were legendary (thanks to one of Africa's best rising goalkeepers Shobeir Jr. and Africa's best defender Mohamed Abdel Moneim (apprently soon off to Europe).
Well done Esperance for reaching the Final (against initial expectations), and for improving against Al Ahly (last year they lost twice 4-0 aggregate) and for having a great new goalkeeping talent Mamish, & for defeating Sundowns in Pretoria, no easy feat).
Well done Young Africans for showing that they've really become contenderts, the first CAF champions league trophy isn't far off now.
I also greatly enjoyed Primeiro de Agosto of Angola for playing exciting, fast, attacking football (this year's over-achievers).
Asec Abidjan, one of Africa's legendary teams, seems to finally be coming back to the forefront of African football again.
Sundowns were amazing as usual, but also as usual, lack that winning mentality to go all the way.
Delighted with Al Ahly's 12th title (only 2 behind Real Madrid before tonight's game !) but the overal level in this tournament was relatively poor...hopefully just a blip...
