Color vision can be tested in several different ways - Ishihara color plates (ICP), Hardy Rand Rittler (HRR) plates, Farnsworth D-15, and Farnsworth Munsell 100 test.
But which one is best? 🧐
My preference is the HRR plates for three reasons -
✅ HRR tests both blue-yellow and red- green deficiencies while ICP can pick up red-green.
✅ HRR picks up both congenital and acquired color deficiencies while ICP is designed for congenital
✅ HRR can be used for patients with decreased acuity down to 20/200 while ICP is valid only up to 20/60 based on the resolution of the dots.
Just to be fair- what is the downside of HRRs?
Some patients simply don’t understand the test. They may prefer identifying numbers on ICP 🔢 rather than shapes on HRR. 🔼⏺
