Owing to many different winds that can blow on the lake, it can be a dangerous lake for sailing. Sailors used to sailing on the seas and oceans who go out on the lake are surprised by how "angry" the lake can be. Some of the greatest sailors who have won races on the Atlantic and round the world were and are Swiss, and their great skills come from having trained on the lake.

Note that these are professional fishermen who sell their catch to restaurants, hotels and particulars. Many years ago I had a boyfriend who was a professional fisherman, and I would go out with him on the lake when he cast his nets and also at dawn when he would haul them in, I helped him haul them in (quite a technique and physical exertion) and then help him pluck the fish out of the nets, kill those who were still alive, and help him remove the scales and clean the fish. The big sellers are perch, extremely popular, I also helped him fillet the perch - that too is quite a skill.

The principal source of pollution of the lake comes from the French side. The Swiss have long established laws and measures to prevent the pollution which stemmed mainly from agriculture using phosphate, and implementing biodegradable washing powders and liquids. No such measures in France, unfortunately.
