Optical Drives - CD and DVD on Chromebook - Audio CDs Updated 2018

As you may have noticed, many new laptops do not come with an internal CD or DVD player. So an external CD/DVD player is needed. I used a Samsung Ext. DVD Writer Model SE-S084 .
Any of the Ext. DVD drives from Newegg should be the same.

The Chromebook shown is an Acer Chromebook 15 Model CB515

Chromebooks do not play audio CDs, so those audio CD need to have their music converted to mp3 files in order to be played within a Chromebook.
DVD movies do play now on Chromebooks, using the VLC App, found within the Chrome Web Store.

THANK YOU!! I had almost given up on my CD/DVD external drive. Now I see that it doesn't play regular audio CD's. This came as a surprise to me. I would've thought by my laptop being an Asus Chromebook that it would definitely pp lay audio CD's like a desktop would.

Thanks for the video. I have an Acer R11 that will not recognize a usb cd drive. I also have an Asus c302 that instantly recognizes it. Acer support informs me that not any Acer Chromebook supports external usb cd/dvd drives. Support tech and his supervisor both emphatically stated that it won't happen on any Acer CB. Excellent quality video. Appreciate it.

What if I want to rip music from a CD into my laptop from this external CD drive? Would I be able to rip it into windows media player? A modern CD by the way.

WOW, the VLC just played a movie from a DVD on my Chromebook. Interesting that it did not play during the making of this video! I will go over just those new steps to make your Chromebook play a DVD movie in the next video. Cheers.

I found a few links from the Chrome App store:

I just tested it and it plays my downloaded movies that are on my Chromebook.
If you are having an issue, let me know, because I know I also use the Android version on my Chromebook.

I have been asking Chromebook representatives at BestBuy retail store and they told me that it has not caught up with developing a OS for CHROMEBOOKS that has a capability with an external USB DVD/CD drive and hard drive. Are the computer and external DVD players the only ones on the market for this capability? How is this possible?? Send people a link to where to find this information on external CD/DVD that says it is compatible on Chromebooks! This really does not make sense to me on how this is possible. BTW, I had a Acer Chromebook and now instead of I have a Asus 11' Chromebook.

I have a Toshiba chromebook Will the (External CD Drive, Cocopa USB 3.0 Portable CD DVD +/-RW Drive Slim DVD/CD ROM Rewriter Burner Writer) compatible with my Chromebook and will it play DVDs? If not, do you know which portable drive will work?
