I dont completely oppose mids but I believe that they make the tone too muddy even at a moderate level. So, I keep them low but never scoop them completely out, that is a bad tone. And most of Metallica's tones come from re-recording guitar tracks like four times, at least on the black album.

The only way to get the best possible tone is to buy every boss distortion / OD pedal there is, run them I'm sequence and keep adding every new one they make. All this should be run into one of Boss' floor units and then you can make a tiny practice amp sound like a mesa bogey.

The metal zone, even modded, on it's own sounded lije sandpaper on glass. Glad I was actually kind of close when I posted the line of metal zones with a couple of distortion picture on facebook.

I think that the Biyang Metal End would be perfect somewhere in there man.

So I just got rid of my MXR Fullbore Metal Distortion because I felt that I didn't have enough control on the high frequencies, and that the sound starts to get loaded up and loses definition at the higher gain settings. Now I'm trying to find a distortion pedal that can give me lots of compression and some slight saturation in the high end without the mid ranges being lost.

So what sort of distortion pedal would sound good through a clean channel and sort of imitate the distortion tone of a good amp like a Peavey 6505, or some sort of Mesa Boogie?

on my orange TH 30 and OR100 i chose a maxon OD808. works amazing towards a metal sound. the amps have more gain than ever needed but the maxon kinda leans more metal as my amps of.course are more rock or heavy blues kinda 70s voiced

As much as this tone is an assault on the ears, it's pretty much perfect for thrash/speed metal. I do have to say though that this is pretty much just a Metallica tone, not a Pantallica tone as you dubbed it. Pantera's guitar sound was much bigger. Sure, on some songs (and maybe live, idk) they had a really overharsh tone, but on most of their stuff they had a much bigger, fuller tone, at least once you get past Cowboys From Hell, but for all I know, that was just the engineer at the studio making changes in post to try to fix the clusterfuck of sound that a lot of these early thrash players were putting out. Again, I didn't know about the whole "usefulness of the tone knob" until earlier today when I watched your video, so, yeah.

Sweet, I guessed correctly! Thanks for the challenge Colin. I will use my new horrible tone knowledge to rescue all the poor local metal bands from their own ears (or more likely get a firm slap from the army of overprotective guitarists.)

I don't know a single good metal band where the guitarists use pedals for their distortion. They use tube driven distortion from their amps, it makes the earth skake. Pedals sound thin and tinny.

The DS1 sounds waaay more hideous than the Metalzone to me. I've always hated that cheap "Marshall with broken cones" tone it has.

I know quite a few guys who turn their bass and highs to 10 and their mids to 0, and plug in a Metal Zone/Metal Muff/Metal Master with bass and highs at 10 and mids at 0. Talk about sound like dogshit.
