Paddlegate 2022 - CRBN pickleball paddles were banned at the Minto US Open in Naples, Florida in the middle of the tournament, on 4.29.22. CRBN has now released statement about the full story and makes vow to customers, Joola releases statement dismissing intrepid incomplete in-field testing video of Joola paddles purportedly registering "failing" surface roughness testing scores, PPA Announces NEW on-site paddle testing at all events for Pros:

- 4.29 - US Open makes statement that CRBN is recalling, so players shouldn't use them (but not "banned")
- 4.30 - USA Pickleball releases statement announcing removal of ALL CRBN paddles from approved paddle list
- 4.30 - PPA makes statement that it will follow USAP's lead and ban CRBN paddles from events
- 4.30 - Joola makes announcement dismissing an unauthorized video that surfaced purportedly showing incomplete testing of its paddles and not-so-positive commentary from the tester

Thank you for posting. It is interesting. US Open should have tested all paddles when they tested CRBN, to keep it fair. But they didn't. And have you read/heard about PPA's new rules on players who contest another player's paddle? Simply, if you think another player's paddle is illegal and have it tested. If it IS legal, you have to pay PPA $250. They will take the money out of winnings or you have to pay them within 10 days. If you do this three times in 180 days, PPA will/can ban you from all future PPA tournaments.

I come from a tennis background and the speed/scale is quicker/further than tennis. I really like the tech level of pickleball. I think it feels inclusive... despite being a bit hamstrung (~slower). I'm don't think I have an opinion on what should be done. I think it's tough to regulate how much friction a paddle has. Tennis doesn't try (that I know of). I'd like pickle to stay fun, social, engaging and at the level of competition it's at. Because I like where pickle is at now.

I wonder about the Selkirk Labs Project 002. I haven't played with it because I'm not paying $333, but I've heard it has a lot of surface texture.

So the Ben John’s/Joola connection and statement out is interesting, yet no other carbon fiber paddle manufacturer has also come out stating their paddles are compliant….interesting…

Would you know of the USAPA process in acknowledging, then acting on paddle complaints ? Can anyone / player make an accusation and force an immediate in-field test ? I am of the understanding if the in-field test fails then the paddle is further tested in a lab…..what might be the standard turnaround time for this ?

This sounds like BS to me! The CRBN has the same surface as the Electrum Pro. The difference is the CRBN is a better quality paddle. The CRBN IS SOLID with good flexibility. The Electrum feels like it’s bought from Walmart! He could have done a warning and advise CRBN it’s under investigation.It’s politics to squeeze CRBN out of the market because they blow the competition out of the water.
